Trading the Karoo for the Winelands, Rebecca Ann Light embarked on her academic journey in Environmental Studies at Stellenbosch University in 2016. This was followed by an honours and masters degree, adding Geography to her resume. While completing her masters, Rebecca lectured the subject to education students at both Stellenbosch University and Sol Plaatje University. She has made two contributions to her field in the form of book chapters. The first stemming from her honours research in 2019 and the second from her masters research in 2023. Rebecca started her position as Project Coordinator for the CGA in 2022. She's focused on the Data CoOp project (https://lnkd.in/dS3MBbXA), aiming to benefit the pome and stone fruit industry in the Western Cape with a centralised geographic database. In her spare time, Rebecca enjoys video games, time with her dog, reading a good book, singing and creative writing. #employee #projectcoordinator #keepitup

Save our School - Fleming College's Frost Campus is in free-fall!!! By now, I am sure that some, if not many, of you, have heard the news about Fleming College's recent announcement to suspend 29 programs across the college. Seventeen of these programs are offered at the Frost Campus in Lindsay, Ontario, including, but not limited to, all third-year technology programs (Ecosystem Management, Environmental Technology, Fish and Wildlife), the Conservation and Environmental Law Enforcement program, Ecological Restoration (joint degree program with Trent University), and the entire GIS suite of post-diploma programs. At the Brealey (Peterborough) campus, almost all of the programs in the School of Business have been suspended. What you may not know is this - that there was absolutely NO consultation with program faculty and staff regarding these suspensions, and (in my opinion) little to no regard for the ramifications of these decisions into the future - decisions that will impact potential applicants and future enrolment; decisions that will impact our countless co-op and work-integrated-learning partnerships; decisions that will impact the many articulation and transfer agreements we have with institutions across our country and around the world; decisions that will impact the reputation and integrity of this fine institution, and decisions that will directly impact our current students, our colleagues, our friends, our entire and extended Frost family. The senior leadership at this College is deaf to the voices of current students and staff, and is operating the institution under a regime of oppression, distrust, disrespect, and deceit. So, if there was a time in the history of the Frost Campus and Fleming College to speak up, NOW IS THE TIME. YOUR VOICE MATTERS, and with enough voices raised, I believe that our actions can make a difference! If you have been positively impacted by Fleming College, either as an alumnus, an employer of our fine graduates, an organization that has worked with us and our students for placements, internships. co-op or applied research projects, as a parent, in ANY capacity, WE NEED YOUR VOICE. Write to the Minister of Colleges and Universities, post on social media, contact your local MP/MPP, contact your local media outlets and share your Fleming story... We live in a country where freedom of speech is (still) possible - please, take the opportunity this freedom affords and speak up for a place that has changed thousands of lives and impacted this planet in a positive way. Long live the Frost Campus and all that it stands for. With my ultimate gratitude and utmost respect to all... Barb

This was the most entertaining project to be a part of in the last couple years! Lots of other great collaborations and events but I want to highlight the amazing work of (newly minted) Dr. Julia Palozzi. And the highest praise for her co-supervisors Dr. Nancy Shackelford and Dr. Maria del Carmen Rodriguez de France. Julia took us into her world as an imaginative ecologist... and has offered an amazing approach to reinvigorate teaching environmental education. Julia dove in and uncovered the many ways environmental education is taught. Using a systems-thinking approach, she drew clever parallels between ecological concepts (like plant traits and strategies) and teaching styles to better understand how different methods tackle the subject. By breaking down and reassembling teaching traits, she identified eight big-picture teaching strategies that show how it all fits together. The result? A handy framework for educators to mix and match ideas, revamp curricula, and make environmental education more impactful and fun! From plants to pedagogies. The Figures and Tables alone are worth a view. Full paper is available on my Researchgate page: https://lnkd.in/gRcZfPHC Just request a copy and I can send it to you via Researchgate. #environmentaleducation #curricula #scienceeducation #systemthinking https://lnkd.in/gSbUZE3c

Determining high school students’ functional environmental literacy and the effect of participatory action research on functional environmental literacy Kulshash Kabylbek, Lisa M. DeChano-Cook, Dzhumadil Childibaev & Nuri Balta Pages: 1-17 | DOI: 10.1080/13504622.2024.2437572 Abstract This quantitative study employed both survey and experimental research designs to investigate environmental literacy and engagement among high school students in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Survey data collected from 269 students revealed their awareness, feelings, and knowledge of environmental issues, while a group of 65 students underwent experimental research (over a three-month period) to assess its impact on their ecological knowledge. Results revealed heightened awareness of environmental issues in urban areas, with pollution and waste management identified as significant concerns. Notably, students exhibited nuanced environmental attitudes influenced by school contexts, gender, and socioeconomic factors. Moreover, students’ engagement in environmental protection activities varied across school types, with private school students showing higher involvement levels. Importantly, engaging in action research significantly enhanced students’ knowledge of ecology and environmental science, indicating the transformative potential of experiential learning approaches. #ecologicalfunctionalliteracy #participatoryactionresearch #Kazakhstan #SDG11 #sustainablecitiesandcommunities https://lnkd.in/gzRGXerv

Today is my first #DamProudDay at Oregon State University! What an incredible way to see a snapshot of all the work the university is doing to accomplish the three goals of its strategic plan: 1. A university focused on big discoveries that drive big solutions. 2. A university where every student graduates. 3. A university that fuels a thriving world in every dimension. Even better, it's an invitation from the Oregon State University Foundation to support the work directly. You can never go wrong investing in education! I'm proud to support some of our world-class research centers, Finish in Four, Extension Service, and the Office of Institutional Diversity. Here's why: 1. Funding research helps drive discoveries that lead to real-world solutions. 2. Supporting our students with high financial need to complete college in four years, with no debt, is a practical way to support their success and help them overcome a significant barrier to earning a degree. 3. Sharing our knowledge with Oregonians helps us build a more resilient future and gives youth life-changing, hands-on learning experiences. 4. None of it matters if we're not working to recruit and retain students and faculty from underrepresented communities, whose perspectives and lived experiences enhance our work. (Check out this awesome example: https://lnkd.in/gaZYP3fe) I'll put the link to the Dam Proud Day website in the comments, if you want to learn more.
