There is no shortage of policy intervention examples that are designed to address low literacy and numeracy skills, but how many interventions work as successfully for people experiencing homelessness? Low literacy and numeracy skills, combined with the effects of homelessness, create a classic example of a complex policy problem. Cause and effect are entangled together, with a vicious cycle of lower educational attainment feeding into lower income and economic precariousness, which increases risk of homelessness and the potential for intergenerational effects as the cycle repeats. This new report by Julia Ellingwood, Dimitris Vallis and Michael Sanders at The Policy Institute at King's College London asks what we know about literacy, numeracy and homelessness. Please do read this report, which supports many of the recommendations made in our Literacy100 Charter for adults experiencing homelessness: ‘Empowerment Through Literacy’. Next steps alongside Kat’s excellent work should be research into the cognitive processes involved in initial literacy skills acquisition in adults. This would be a groundbreaking piece of work, providing an essential basis for the most effective teaching methods and early literacy curriculum.

Did you know that over 185,000 children in England started school last year without the language and literacy skills needed to thrive? 🚸 Poor literacy has lifelong consequences - new research shows that around 106,000 five-year-old's could have met expected literacy levels with the right early support. The economic cost of this literacy gap is estimated at £830 million over their lifetimes. Children from disadvantaged backgrounds are most at risk, with 43,000 of those 106,000 children living in deprived areas. Factors like poverty, lack of resources, and parental struggles with literacy contribute to this divide.
