Last week, prof. dr. Andreja Jaklic, assist. prof. dr. Anže Burger and assist. Iris Koleša, PhD from the Centre of International Relations – CIR (University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Social Sciences) presented their research at the Academy of International Business (AIB) 2024 conference in Seul. The conference attracted 1450 researchers from around the world to discuss the dynamics of international business. The event featured many inspiring speakers and insightful presentations. The three CIR researchers presented the paper ‘Does SMEs’ success in domestic public procurement promote their internationalisation and where?’ co-authored by prof. dr. Desislava Dikova from WU (Vienna University of Economics and Business) in a competitive session on the impact of home institutions on the internationalisation of firms. They highlighted that winning public tenders domestically can serve as an internationalisation stimulus for #SMEs and that this effect is limited to markets closer to the domestic one (i.e. the effect of #PublicProcurement on #internationalisation is regional). Prof. dr. Andreja Jaklič was also on a panel with assist. prof. dr. Lukasz Puslecki, prof. dr. hab. Piotr Trąpczyński and prof. dr. hab. Marian Gorynia from the Poznan University of Economics And Business, assoc. prof. Miklos Kozma, PhD and assoc. prof. Miklós Stocker, Ph.D., Habil. from the Corvinus University of Budapest, and prof. dr. hab. Mirosław Jarosiński and assoc. prof. dr. Małgorzata Stefania Lewandowska from the SGH Warsaw School of Economics. The panelists discussed a new wave of #transition in the Central and Eastern European (CEE) region, with a particular emphasis on the changes in #ValueChains, #investments and #InnovationCooperation. They thereby highlighted the adversity advantage of #CEE firms due to their experience with constant change, their enhanced partnerships with academic institutions and increasing innovativeness (also in terms of introducing new business models) as well as regionalisation as some of the opportunities for boosting CEE's competitiveness. #AIB2024 #conference #InternationalBusiness #research

Happy to share our paper "Entrepreneurs in residence at the nexus of Regional Economy and University Entrepreneurial Ecosystems" with Beldina Owalla, PhD and BingBing Ge has been accepted in Regional Studies, Regional Science (RSRS) (ABDC A). Entrepreneurs in Residence (EiRs), chosen by universities as exemplar entrepreneurs, provide potentially important conduits between the regional economy, University Entrepreneurial Ecosystems (UEEs) and entrepreneurs, leading us to explore how and why do EiRs and universities interact in relation to entrepreneurial ecosystems to enhance regional economy? Our qualitative study of a UK university case, conducted in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic which severely impacted many businesses’ access to resources, gives a particular temporal context to this research. It identifies accessing resources, building legitimacy and undertaking bridging activities as the three highest-level dimensions characterising EiR-University interactions, which have relevance for both the UEE and regional economy more widely, offering a framework for future EiR programmes. Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Benchmarking Workshop   Today we co-organized the second OECD - OCDE – Utrecht University Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Workshop in Paris, with a focus on benchmarking as a policy tool for all 38 OECD countries, building on the excellent data analytics team work by OECD colleagues Roberto Crotti, Jonathan Potter, Pablo Shah, with a little contribution by myself.   In the workshop, a lot of very useful feedback was provided by Bernd Wurth, Mark Hart, Arnis Sauka, Cesare Riillo, Nataliya Langburd Wright, Jip Leendertse, Mirella Schrijvers, Timothée Gomot, Robert McDonald, Jonathan Levie, Colin Mason, Job Teurlinx, Salvatore Zecchini, Fernando Gimenez, Edmundo Inácio Junior, Hugo Kantis, Kübra Karataş and Bruno Fischer.   It’s great to see this evolution of the entrepreneurial ecosystem research field (now more than 38000 publications on entrepreneurial ecosystems according to Google Scholar), also with this work done at the OECD to better measure entrepreneurial ecosystems and to better connect it to policy making. We have made quite some progress since the 2013 OECD workshop in The Hague! Before #SSETS Before embracing entrepreneurial thinking, many scientists focused primarily on theoretical research and the pursuit of knowledge, with limited attention to how their work could be applied to address market needs, create value, or solve practical problems. This mindset often hindered the full potential of their discoveries and slowed down the process of translating research into tangible societal or economic benefits. After #SSETS Entrepreneurial thinking in research refers to the mindset and approach that researchers adopt to not only generate new knowledge or innovations but also to identify ways to translate these discoveries into viable products, services, or solutions with commercial or societal value. It involves a proactive, problem-solving attitude, focusing on the practical application of research to address real-world challenges. In essence, entrepreneurial thinking in research helps scientists and innovators bridge the gap between academic exploration and real-world impact by fostering a mindset geared towards commercialization, scalability, and long-term sustainability. My personal journey and experience so far has been positive because I am learning on how to embrace and engage the industry through platforms like the Linkedin that have proven to be effective for academia-industry meeting points. Using experimental data from Germany, India, Indonesia, and the USA, it shows that private transfers remain unaffected by redistribution policies, driven more by egotistic than social motives.
