The Social Impact-a-thon this past weekend was fantastic! The students heard from incredible guest speakers and then came up with their own innovative solutions towards climate change that they pitched to a panel of judges. We had 8 teams pitch – they all put in so much work and came up with great ideas in a very short timeframe, as they competed for a top 3 spot and cash awards! Here was the outcome… 🥇 First place winner ($1000) was Ciara Molloy (B. Geography), Katie Staubitzer (B. Commerce, co-op) & Jessica Ryder (B. Commerce) with their idea, Ecolawns – transforming conventional lawns into rewilded landscapes. 🥈Second place winner ($750) was Erfan Roueintan (M. Environmental Engineering), Zeinab Salehiankia (M. Environmental Science) & Farhan Amir Turjo (B. Geography) with their idea Roots & Routes – providing newcomers with essential skills for success in the green economy. 🥉Third place winner ($500) was Aman Gangani (B. Commerce) & Rahil Jiwani (B. Commerce) with their idea Proactive – a smart software platform providing real-time insights to ensure resource availability and disaster readiness. Huge congratulations to the winners and everyone who participated in our event! #ready4climateaction

Very inspiring and thought-provoking key notes and panelist interventions during this first of 3-days of Nature-based Solutions Conference 2024 – growing positive change! The GoNaturePositive! team is present in Oxford and following online 😊. 1st session discussed how to scale Nature-based Solutions with integrity. Unai Pascual in keynote talked about the elements that would truly make a NbS transformative force in society, focusing on the need for collective responsibility and action to obtain real changes in values, power relations, norms and rules. Social and environmental justice, protecting people and nature from harm, are at the core of transformational NbS. Also, complex systems thinking is needed, especially to understand and address the underlying drivers of nature negative actions, and value pluralism on how we perceive our relationship with nature and have respect for other worldviews. Very refreshingly, Unai Pascual strongly suggested to ditch the idea that we can solve our climate and biodiversity crises by balancing social, economy and nature. No, our world needs to recognize the economy is embedded in the biosphere and not external to it! Quite a team, quite a week. The climate-related events of 2024 and especially these of this week are stark reminders of the importance of our collective effort on adaptation: only in France, farmers suffered from one of the worst harvest on record, and Kirk made landfall bringing exceptionally high precipitation increasing the risk of poor harvest for sunflower and maize in the places where these had not already been harvested. Getting the team on the same trajectory and aiming for the same objectives is key to our ability to contribute to make the agricultural sector more resilient, especially for farmers and the financial institutions supporting the sector. Continuing on our 100-day planning strategy, finres team met in Paris this week to prepare our plan for the next quarter, leading us to the end of 2024. Expect some exciting news on several fronts: the use of LLMs in scientific assessments, global yield mapping, understanding of adaptation blockers in agriculture from a behavioural perspective, unprecedented yield and climate data quality and resolution, new countries and products. A big 🙏🏻 to the team: Schaeffer Michiel Dan Xie Caroline Vu Louis d'Hautefeuille Yann Bouffanais Mathilde Duvallet Vhiny-Guilley Mombo Yona Uzan Joe Freeman Ben Martineau Mohamed ALKASSEM Mike Girling Sidiki Sanogo Raj Rani Jehanne Reboud and onwards!

I am thrilled to share that I have successfully completed "The Introduction to Nature, Business, and Finance" course, created by the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Through this course, I have gained a deeper understanding of how nature impacts businesses and economies, as well as the risks and opportunities tied to biodiversity loss. The insights into the TNFD recommendations provide actionable steps for integrating nature into financial and business decision-making. It is clear that nature is not just a backdrop to our activities—it is the foundation of our economies. Recognizing this, I am eager to apply these skills in real-world scenarios to drive nature-positive outcomes, support sustainable business practices, and contribute to a resilient financial system. As we move toward a future aligned with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, I believe we all have a role to play in embedding nature into decision-making processes. Let’s build a sustainable future together! 🌱
