Congratulations to Sertan Kabadayi, Ph.D., Joseph Keating SJ Distinguished Professor in Business, Professor of Marketing, Director of the Professional M.B.A. Program, and Director of Teaching Excellence, on his paper “A dignity-vulnerability approach framework to maximize well-being outcomes by transformative service initiatives (TSIs)," which was co-authored with Reut Live-Tarandach, Ph.D., Associate Professor Management & Marketing, Manhattan College; and Michael Pirson, Ph.D., Professor, Area Chair of Leading People and Organizations, and James A. F. Stoner Endowed Chair in Global Sustainability. The paper received the 2024 Outstanding Paper Award from the Journal of Services Marketing, one of the major journals in the service field. It proposes a framework using approach to vulnerability (strength vs deficit based) and dignity (ignored vs respected) and offers pathways for service organizations to improve effectiveness of their Transformative Service Initiatives. Are negotiation theory, practice, and pedagogy up to the task of ensuring that all negotiations—public and private, and whether or not explicitly focused on an issue of sustainability—address sustainability in socially responsible ways? This special issue of the Negotiation Journal invites original and rigorous scholarship that addresses whether and how our contemporary frameworks for interest-based negotiations can, do, or should take broader societal interests into account. Today, I have the pleasure of sharing some good news: My dissertation has been approved on the application of Prof. Dr. Antoinette Weibel and Prof. Dr. Sybille Sachs summa cum laude. I’m utterly grateful to my two supervisors for their continuous support and thought-provoking feedback, which always allowed me to improve my work! Thank you also to my colleagues, Dr. Ramona Demasi, Silvan Oberholzer, and Emily Bauer, and fellow researchers Dr. Anastasia Sapegina, Dr. Meike Wiemann-Hügler, and Yeshi Deuss-Ngingthatshang for contributing to my research with their collaboration and numerous productive discussions. With their support, my PhD journey during the last five years has resulted in over 200 pages of text containing 3 related studies in Management. These studies explore how businesses and other organisations engage with their stakeholders when relationships are characterised by distrust and intractable conflict. In a time of increasingly complex challenges and deepening societal divisions, I hope my dissertation makes at least a tiny contribution to more peaceful relations. Here are 3 key insights: 💡 Distrust vs. Suspicion: ‘Suspicion’ is a warning signal indicating a potential escalation into distrust, if left unaddressed; but it is also a conflict-resolving force once stakeholders break through the self-sustaining state of distrust. 💡 When distrust hits: Reversing distrust (e.g., after a scandal) differs from trust repair. It requires stakeholder engagement efforts to rebuild stakeholder acceptance and credibility before trust can be (re)built. 💡 The bridging power of neutral third parties and their different roles: They support (1) distrusting stakeholders in becoming 'ready' for dialogue with those with whom dialogue seems unthinkable, (2) the healing of negative emotions arising from relational disruptions, and/or (3) shared strategic goals despite insurmountable value differences. The dissertation, titled "Stakeholder Engagement on the 'Dark Side'," will be published by the University of St. Gallen in September 2024.

This year, in 2024, I had the pleasure of contributing as a reviewer and author at the annual conference of the European Academy of Management “EURAM”, held from 25 to 28 June at the University of Bath in the United Kingdom. In my paper entitled “BENEFIT CORPORATIONS AND THE INCORPORATION OF VALUES INTO CORPORATE STRUCTURES,” I discussed the ways in which shareholders' values can be incorporated into corporate governance structures and the correct identification of such values, using the metrics adopted by UNESCO in its MIL Cities Framework. The paper will be published soon.

I am pleased to announce that I was recently invited and have accepted to become a member of the Harvard Business Review (HBR) Advisory Council, "a unique online research community." In this role, I will have opportunities to provide insight to shape the content that HBR develops (i.e., books, magazines, website, and other content) and to enrich understanding on ideas from HBR and the wider world of management and leadership. In short, I will have the opportunity "to weigh in on current business topics and issues and share in research findings" and other knowledge products. This fits nicely with research I am currently undertaking on the impact of private sector development in the Caribbean and work I do regularly, mostly through my firm Launchpad Consulting, advising businesses, especially SMEs, on sustainability approaches and strategies. I am also a member of the Editorial Committee of the Round Table Journal of Commonwealth Affairs, a role I have held for the past two years, and have contributed two articles on climate change and climate justice respectively, and guest edited two special editions of the journal under those themes as well. Beyond these engagements, I am currently working on a number of historical research projects including for a book provisionally titled "A history of Belize in Seven Disasters," and another also provisionally titled "Garland: The Annual Holy Saturday Cross Country Race and development of national identity in Belize." Additionally, I am now working on turning my PhD thesis titled: "Canals and borders: The dynamics of British expansion in Central America and the Anglo-Guatemalan territorial dispute, c. 1821-1863 into a book.
