Solarpunk is a world where nature and technology coexist, we don’t waste, renewable energy is the only energy, and we have spaces meant for us to hang out that don’t put toxins in the air or charge us money. Solarpunk is a movement that envisions that. It helps us to imagine a future where humanity has reintroduced regenerative practices and symbiotic technologies. My first introduction to solarpunk was learning about cyberpunk and steampunk years ago in college. There, I encountered an intersection of storytelling, arts, and culture that gave me a futuristic way to see myself. I have often found that people who don't come directly from any environmental background or expertise find themselves entering a new wave of environmentalism through cultural narratives and shifting dominant narratives that often don't serve people who are trying to learn in different ways. Ever heard of cyberpunk? Yeah, basically the opposite of that 👾 Solarpunk is an artistic and literary movement that envisions working towards or achieving a sustainable future, using science and technology as appropriate to help humanity and the planet 🔬 It's important, when we think about the future, that we don't just think about what could go wrong - we also need a plan for what going right could look like! That's where movements like solarpunk (or hopepunk) come in 🌱 Do you feel optimistic when you think about the future? In the short term? 💥💥💥 Are you against a shi**y future? Hollywood loves to depict dystopia in films, and let's face it we eat it up too. Movies like Blade Runner give us a glimpse into a derelict future filled with brutalist concrete buildings, rampant pollution, and a co-dependent relationship with technology. The sci-fi sub-genre "Cyberpunk", what Blade Runner is based on, is rooted in a low-life and high-tech future that isn't too difficult to imagine given our current state. And cyberpunk works well in media because it's the perfect environment for the "hero's story", where our protaganist has all odds against them and emerges amidst the utter chaos. After all, it's easier to visualize being a hero in an apocalypse, than a reality where we all work together to create a utopia, isn't it? Well that's where Solarpunk comes in... As a techno-commercial analyst and cinephile, I often contemplate where our society is headed. Will we become a cyberpunk world, a dystopia of technological excess and lost hope? Or will we embrace solarpunk, a vision of sustainable coexistence with nature? Looking at the current global scenario, it feels like we’re leaning towards solarpunk. While some "developed" nations are clinging to traditionalism, we see bold strides from regions like Scandinavia, the Middle East, and China. These black sheep are leading investments in sustainability and coexistent ecosystems. In the short term (5–10 years), polarization is apparent. Parts of the Western world still attempt to downplay climate change and challenge the impact of younger generations, who are unafraid to be vocal and even "vulgar" in their fight for change. But this period of resistance and denial seems to be a last-ditch effort to maintain control. The world is seeing through this ruse, and the formation of regulations and mandates points to a solarpunk reality.
