The Annual Local Authority Road Maintenance (#ALARM) survey report for 2024, published by the Asphalt Industry Alliance, reveals that over half of the local road network in England and Wales has less than 15 years of structural life remaining, with a record-high backlog of £16.3 billion needed for carriageway repairs. Despite an overall increase in carriageway maintenance budgets, local authority highway teams are struggling due to rising costs and frequent extreme weather events, accelerating the network's deterioration.🚨 Only 47% of roads are in good structural condition, with 53% deteriorating rapidly. Stakeholders emphasise the urgent need for long-term funding solutions to reverse the decline and ensure road safety.⚠ 🔗 Full report: https://lnkd.in/eUU8vn6 #Carriageway #RoadSafety #RoadMaintenance

BROKEN RECORD: Over half the local roads in England and Wales have less than 15 years’ structural life left as the amount needed to fix the backlog of repairs rises to a record high of £16.3 billion. That's among the key findings of this year’s Annual Local Authority Road Maintenance (ALARM) survey report, published today by the Asphalt Industry Alliance. The report highlights the astonishing scale of the challenge faced by #localauthority highway teams who have a statutory responsibility to keep local roads safe but don’t have the funds to do so. Poor road conditions impact on our everyday lives, from the cost and inconvenience of damage to vehicles, to potentially causing accidents and injury to vulnerable road users such as cyclists – some of which have proven fatal. What is the state of the roads in your local area? 🚧🛣️ Today is International Road Maintenance Day – a great opportunity to discuss results from the recent ALARM survey as published by the Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA). According to the report, 45% of authorities reported a cut or freeze in their highway maintenance budget, leaving a record-high budget shortfall – and two million potholes to fix in the current financial year. Steve. Sinnott, UK Sales Manager, commented: “The statistics highlighted in the recent ALARM survey show an urgent need for investment to catch up with the backlog of road maintenance on the nation’s road networks. Long term repairs offer greater value for money and will give the public the confidence they are shouting out for. Equipment is available today from companies such as Econ Engineering to offer this cost-effective long-term road repair solution.” You can read the executive summary or download the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eUU8vn6 #InternationalRoadMaintenanceDay #Potholes #ALARMSurvey2024

Exactly this, and what Civil Engineering Contractors Association (National) is focusing on in 2024.
ALARM: Half of road network has less than 15 years left More than half of the local road network in England and Wales is reported to have less than 15 years’ structural life left as the amount needed to fix the backlog of carriageway repairs increases to a record high of £16.3 billion. This year’s Annual Local Authority Road Maintenance (ALARM) survey report by the Asphalt Industry Alliance, highlights the scale of the challenge that faces local authority highway teams. Despite government commitments for new cash, and local authority highways teams reporting an increase in maintenance budgets, the rising costs of inflation have meant they have to do more with less. The increasing number of extreme weather events has also accelerated the rate of decline. ALARM data shows that only 47% of roads in England and Wales are classed as being in good structural condition, with the remaining 53% – more than 107,000 miles – now having less than 15 years’ structural life remaining.
