We are advocates for energy efficiency as a primary step towards sustainable practices. Yes, renewable energy sources such as solar panels are crucial, but shouldn't we first address the energy wastage that occurs every day in our buildings? A report from the U.S Department of Energy reveals that the average commercial and industrial facility in America wastes 30% of the energy it consumes. It's imperative to remember that there is no cheaper source of energy than the energy not wasted. LED lights are indeed an excellent way to save energy, but think about how much more can be saved by incorporating the right sensors and daylight harvesting with your lighting systems. Or by using sensor data to interact with other building services and systems. We've seen projects hesitate to invest in a truly smart lighting system, thinking that solar panels are sufficient. But when you walk past an almost empty building at night and see the lights on or they forget to switch off the lights? How much of that wasted energy could have been saved, harvested, and fed back into the network to benefit us all? Energy efficiency stands as the best investment with an average ROI of 40%, as compared to a 5% ROI for renewable energy projects. Simple practices like sealing air leaks, replacing dirty filters, properly managing temperature set points, and calibrating Building Automation Systems (BAS) can lead to up to 30% of energy efficiency savings. Let's start with the basics - optimise our energy systems, reduce wastage, and then move towards renewables. By doing this, we not only save energy and reduce costs but also maximise the impact of our investment in renewable energy. In the midst of rapid electrification, renewable energy adoption and digital transformation, we can expect to see some big changes in the energy sector. Balancing increased energy demands with sustainability is a major challenge that will require us to balance renewable energy sources with energy storage solutions and demand response programs. Whilst there’s no doubt that AI will play a central role here, the main problem isn’t a lack of data, but rather how to effectively manage the abundance of data in a way that delivers value to both customers and shareholders. #AI #energy #utilties
