Ethan Harvey ended September for Europinion with a fierce critique of Draghi’s mooted cures for the increasingly atrophied economies of Europe. Labelling them at once short-sighted and ahistorical, unfit for the immediate future and shockingly ill-adjusted to the origins of Europe’s present conundrum, Harvey argued Draghi’s proposals comprise little more than another shameful buck pass by European elites. Jokin de Carlos Sola, in a debut piece, challenges Harvey’s reading of history, his understanding of European political economy, and finally his intellectual Britishness. De Carlos Sola contends that the 1990s expansion in Brussels bureaucracy, which Harvey identifies as the radix malorum of the old continent’s economic woes, was in actuality a panacea for the Eurosclerosis of the preceding decades. Ultimately, de Carlos Sola ascribes the litany of misapprehensions he charges Harvey and the broader British academy with to an academic and cultural incoherence which clouds everything seen by those peering across the Channel and passing judgement on what they see. #Draghi #EU #UK #Politics #Integration #Critique #Brussels #Economy https://lnkd.in/ewjVHcMM

Did you know the Conseil de l'Europe celebrates its 75th anniversary this year? https://lnkd.in/d2_7TRTg https://lnkd.in/dQNC6ZkP In this insightful video titled “Through the lens of #75 years of European history”, the Council invites us on a journey through its history. I liked this video tribute very much. It inspires those who already know the Organisation and claim its role to those who know less about it. Here are my 3 takeaways: ✅ #Epic, epic, epic. Perhaps it is the fault of the music, the timeline, Winston Churchill, or the "Cha cha cha"... The truth is that, unlike the number of dull institutional videos, this one stands out and grabs your attention. And how well the epic suits the Council. More epic,🙏 ✅ #Ukraine is part of #Europe. Although in the Strasbourg bubble, this idea may seem obvious because the country has been a member of the Council since 1995, the truth is that the pro-European and media worlds seem to be guided by the premise that a country that does not belong to the 27 EU member states is not "part of Europe" and that it does not even share the #EuropeanFlag! Nothing could be further from the truth. The #CouncilofEurope is the political community of Europe in which 46 nations participate, including the 27 EU countries. Both organisations share the same flag and anthem. The Council proudly underlines this by opening the video directly with President Ukraine's intervention at the #ReykjavikSummit. And this brings us to another subtle and important piece of this puzzle. The Ukrainian president's chosen speech is not accidental. Perhaps those who do not follow the Council's activities are unaware that last year saw one of the most important meetings the Organisation has held in decades, the 4th Summit of Heads of State and Government in Reykjavik (May 16-17, 2023). https://lnkd.in/d9e6QKNf https://lnkd.in/dk9bHker ✅ #Pioneering. The Council of Europe is a leading force in establishing a shared legal framework for safeguarding #democracy, #humanrights, and the #ruleoflaw across the European continent. This work inspires the EU and countries/organisations outside the European continent. Some of the key examples presented in the video: ▶ The European Convention on Human Rights. ▶ The European Social Charter. ▶ The European Court of Human Rights oversees the implementation of the Convention in the 46 CoE member states. https://lnkd.in/djMT7tqB ▶ The first-ever international legally binding treaties on preventing and combating #ViolenceAgainstWomen and #ArtificialIntelligence. In short, I loved the video tribute. Congratulations to its creators!⭐👏 Let me know in the comments: What do you think of the video? 😉 #CoE75 #HistoryAtHeart #CoEHistory #EuropeaConvencida

📊 Deep diving into fascinating historical parallels that shape modern Europe: Just finished analyzing how the 1284 Battle of Meloria fundamentally altered Italy's maritime destiny. Here's what struck me: Father Alberto Guglielmotti's monumental 1889 maritime vocabulary documented 14 different Italian terms for tides - a testament to our lost maritime heritage Modern Bavaria, accounting for a significant portion of German GDP, is witnessing Alternative für Deutschland becoming one of its top two parties The transformation of Rome's dialect post-1527 (following the Sack of Rome) created a unique linguistic island of Tuscan influence What fascinates me most? The parallel between historical Guelph-Ghibelline divisions and today's German regional dynamics. With Saxon-Bavarian political alignments potentially reshaping EU economic guarantees, we're witnessing history rhyme in real-time. Key insight: While we're fixated on French elections, the real strategic pivot lies in German regional politics - just as it did in the 13th century. #Geopolitics #EuropeanPolitics #EconomicStrategy #PoliticalAnalysis #MaritimeHistory #GlobalTrade #EuropeanUnion #StrategicThinking #Leadership #GlobalAffairs #BusinessStrategy
