Global health leaders are gathering today for #COP29 Health Day—spotlighting the link between climate health and human health 🌍 The climate emergency affects human health in multiple ways, and this includes a rise in infectious diseases. Climate change is expanding the range of disease-carrying animals and insects, fuelling spillover events, and accelerating the spread of infectious diseases. Scientists estimate that over half of known human pathogenic diseases are aggravated by it 📈 This growing threat underscores the need for proactive measures. CEPI’s investments in the pandemic preparedness ecosystem not only builds resilience against future outbreaks but also helps to fortify health systems facing the challenges of a changing climate. The impact of climate change is especially felt in Global South countries, which often bear the brunt of climate change yet have limited resources to adapt. Addressing this imbalance requires a commitment to equity in R&D and medical countermeasures to ensure collective resilience. CEPI remains dedicated to advancing R&D for vaccines and biologics to enhance global epidemic and pandemic preparedness and to solutions that support access to these potentially lifesaving measures—helping to protect vulnerable communities worldwide as we tackle the intertwined challenges of climate change and health. Health equity starts with acknowledging climate inequity. As pointed out below, rising temperatures and shifting ecosystems are amplifying infectious disease risks. Strengthening global health systems through equitable R&D is essential. This is a challenge we can’t afford to ignore.

🌍 Despite its healing mission, the health care sector is a significant contributor to the climate crisis, ranking among the top greenhouse gas emitters globally. If it were a country, it would be the world's fifth-largest emitter. However, it also holds the potential to be part of the solution. With this insight, we're driving systemic change. Dive into our recent feature on the cover of Stanford Social Innovation Review, where Josh Karliner, our director of global partnerships, reflects on the journey to promote sustainability within the health care sector and advance climate action. 🔍 Explore the article to uncover some of the key lessons we've learned along the way: https://lnkd.in/ekNUMJcB

Knowledge is power!!
🍃 This week we published our fourth annual issue of The BMJ dedicated to the climate emergency. Through a series of articles, we explore how health professionals must harness the power of knowledge to strengthen climate leadership and drive change. 📚 The issue includes articles on the threats of mis and dis information around the climate emergency, redefining medical ethics for the planet, and a package of articles on how the growing genre of climate fiction represents a cultural response to the climate crisis. 🌧️ We also learn how increasing rainfall is associated with adverse health outcomes, the many negative health effects of working in extreme heat and we reaffirm The BMJ’s climate commitments. ➡️ 🔗 Click here to read the issue in full: https://lnkd.in/eP6eyYPp Kamran Abbasi Sophie Cook Juliet Dobson BMJ Elisabeth Mahase Mun-Keat Looi
