Bitcoin mining uses energy. But it also pays for that energy. And because of its scalability, location-indifference, and flexibility, it pays for energy in a way that nothing else can. That's why I see bitcoin not as a threat to sustainability, but a new tool in our energy toolkit. The companies I advise share this vision. They're not only imagining innovative ways bitcoin mining can advance our energy economy, they're making it happen in the real world. Anadro is one of these companies that no bitcoin critic ever saw coming. They install home solar systems--panels, inverters, batteries--in California. But along with the solar system, they also also install bitcoin miners, either in the garage or outdoors in a special noise-dampening box. Why install bitcoin miners along with a solar system? Well, most solar installations are sized for current usage, which means they are undersized for the future. As homeowners buy electric vehicles, heat pumps, and induction stoves, their usage goes up, but up-sizing their previous solar installation is very expensive. On-site bitcoin miners fix the problem. They allow for an over-provisioned solar installation in the first place, producing more power than the homeowner uses, which is right-sized for their future use. Bitcoin mining pays for the excess electricity in the waiting period while homeowners electrify their lives. Of course, very few homeowners are in a position to overbuild their own solar and invest in bitcoin miners, specially adapted for residential use. That's why Anadro does it all for them. Anadro pays for the solar system and installs it, along with the bitcoin mining computers and a sophisticated control system. In return, the homeowner buys the power they use from Anadro at a 25% discount from the lowest rate offered by their utility company. For homeowners who want exposure to bitcoin, Anadro has another option, which sells homeowners electricity from their own rooftop at the lowest utility electrical rate (no 25% discount) but also gives them 80% of the bitcoin that are mined on-site. Either way, the homeowner pays nothing for the system installation. They just choose whether to take discounted power or bitcoin in exchange for their roof space and Anadro does the rest. Isn't that cool? Anadro is a small, but fast-growing company. Already, they have completed installs in 36 homes and have a waiting list of homeowners eager to join. I know the founders well and can vouch for their professionalism and integrity. So good to see a business wrapped around what home miners have been doing for a while. This will accelerate the adoption of rooftop solar.
happy to be in this one with you Troy :)
Loved it, I want as many miners I can hold on our current solar arrays and 2 tesla batteries. The question is how is the split of bitcoin profit between company and end user ?
In what kind of world do we consider it virtuous to pay for our energy? It's the bare minimum!!! So, we are creating oversized solar systems (which represents a significant energy cost right now) for future use. Or to mine bitcoins, because tomorrow’s consumption will inevitably be higher. Yet, the top priority should be sobriety and using the energy we already have wisely. More, always more… and California is burning. Solar installations as well.
the best energy for the planet is that which we do not use #ethereum

Are there large subsidies in CA for the homeowners that pass along to this company installing the solar panels at no cost to the homeowner? Interesting concept, the website is pretty limited, but would love to see a breakdown of the projections.

100% agree with you statement Troy. #BTC is the MOST powerful tool we have to drive us towards distributed sustainable energy infrastructure!! Just of Climate Crisis considerations every Nation should be support a #BTC strategy

4wWhat does an install look like? Here are two different implementations of on-site mining: one with quieted machines indoors, and one in a special mining specific outdoor box.
