Next week, our 2024 Summer Analyst class starts. It’s always a special time for me as I joined Insight as a Summer Analyst over two decades ago. It’s a good moment to resurface the outstanding work of Allie Garfinkle that was published recently. I also had the chance to share these career learnings with Insight’s investment analysts at our recent Sourcing Summit, a day of workshops and hands-on learning sessions specially curated to help our analysts (aka our Sourcing Engine) build relationships inside and outside the firm. Here’s a quick overview of what I shared: 1. Prioritize people to enjoy the work: Focus on finding a workplace where you genuinely enjoy the people and connecting with colleagues. 2. Find your passion: We can equip you with everything you need reach out and connect with founders, but it’s up to the individual to find what drives them. 3. Be able (and willing) to be adaptable: Success in VC isn’t about following a prescribed path or list of to-dos. It’s about navigating unpredictable situations with grace and maximum impact. 4. Embrace rejection through passion: Whether your phone call goes unreturned and/or you lose a deal narrowly that you thought you had won, you will face rejection. And you’ll face it often. This is why it’s critical to find your passion for the work, to help you persevere through the not-so-great times. 5. Leverage your unique strengths: Find what you uniquely bring to the table and embrace it. The importance of diverse skillsets cannot be overstated in today’s ever-evolving tech ecosystem. Allie Garfinkle at Fortune—she captured these well and painted a picture of our firm’s culture that I am especially proud of. My biggest piece of advice no matter where you are is to find a workplace where you like the people and can make an impact. At Insight, the bonds you will form manifest themselves in a variety of ways: the ability to persevere through hard-fought wins and tough losses, getting asked to work on another team’s deal because you are more familiar with the market, participating in book clubs (Team Hinkle just read Everyday Business Storytelling)...and these are just a few examples. Interpersonal bonds are the cornerstone of Insight’s culture, and they make possible all of the other qualities you need to be successful in VC. Welcome Insight Summer Analyst Class of 2024. I look forward to watching you thrive.

Yesterday, we had an amazing opportunity to host Saumya Agarwal , the VP at Peak XV at The VC Fellowship by HIREVC. Her session on "How to make your Career into Venture Capital" was full of amazing insights. Here are some of the key takeaways: 1) Joining as an analyst is the most common way that people get into VC. 2) There is a common belief that Tier 1 VCs only hire from engineering or CA backgrounds, which is not true. 3) The most popular career options post-analyst are MBA, Founder's Office Role, and some get promoted to Associates. 4) There are different non-investment roles in a VC that include operations, tech, HR, and legal. Thank you, Saumya, for sharing your expertise with us! #VC #CareerAdvice #InvestmentRoles #TheVCFellowship #HIREVC

VC Partner - “Identify job openings ahead of time” “It is no secret that there are only a few junior VC jobs out there. I estimate ~100 non-partner VC roles across the main funds in Western Europe, but since most of these investors seem to enjoy their jobs, the turnover is low and as a result, new openings are particularly rare. What that means for aspiring investors is that - → one needs to follow the job openings proactively over some time → react as soon as something opens up versus just looking around for openings when trying to make a move. It also means that most vacancies for Associate roles don’t make it to a public posting or job board as they tend to get filled quickly with an already strong candidate pipeline many funds have via their network and specialized recruiters. But just emailing every fund asking whether they are currently looking for someone is probably also a bad idea; The best time to reach out to VCs is when they are likely looking for someone new, typically when someone junior on the investment team is on the way out to a new company. VCs also sometimes increase their team when they have just raised a new, larger-than-before fund, but more often than not it’s too late when you can read about it on TechCrunch or a newsletter like Venture Daily Digest (https://lnkd.in/dQuvt5xR). Overall, it is probably worth mentioning that cold emails to the talent manager of the VC or members of the investment team have a lower hit rate, even when the fund is likely to be looking for someone new. Just like when entrepreneurs want to reach out to VCs for fundraising, the most effective way of getting attention is via an introduction through someone they already know (LinkedIn works well to find mutual connections.” Though seemingly simple, this advice is incredibly powerful. Many aspiring venture capitalists overlook crucial job opportunity updates. That's why we have created our Slack community where we share daily updates on full-time/internship VC opportunities.
