One of the most disputed aspects in the context of Russia's war against Ukraine is that of territorial concessions - a typical "land for peace" deal. While many international experts (and pseudo-experts) regularly discuss this issue, the opinion of Ukrainian society is seldom considered in more detail. The renowned Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) has now published it's opinion poll data on the Discuss Data platform in open access. We had a very engaging seminar with 𝘿𝒓 𝑿𝙞𝒂𝙤𝒓𝙤𝒏𝙜 𝙂𝒖 from University of Suffolk & 𝙋𝒓𝙤𝒇 𝑫𝙤𝒓𝙞𝒔 𝑩𝙪̈𝒉𝙡𝒆𝙧-𝙉𝒊𝙚𝒅𝙚𝒓𝙗𝒆𝙧𝒈𝙚𝒓 from University of Wuppertal discussed on the topic of 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘀 𝗕𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗿: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝘀𝗶𝗮. Building on two editors’ prior work guest-editing special issues with Current Sociology on childhoods in the Global North (Bühler-Niederberger, 2010) and the Global South (Gu, 2022) respectively, this book project provides multifaceted insights into the social conditions and perspectives of the young generation in various Asian countries and simultaneously sketches the research landscape. They followed three theoretical-methodological guidelines: 1) foregrounded the voices and contributions of young people in their structural, cultural and situational contexts; 2) pursued a dynamic analysis of intergenerational relations in their constant revision and reconstitution in response to social challenges as Asian societies undergo multi-dimensional social transformations, of different constellations in each case; and 3) without reifying Asia as merely a geographic concept, they significantly broadened the scope of their studies to a rich collection of case countries in East, Southeast, Central Asia and their diaspora communities across the world. With 16 contributing chapters by 20 excellent scholars affiliated with institutions across the world, this volume ushers in a sociology of childhood in Asia and lays a foundation for future research on global childhood and youth studies. Ukrainians' Views on the State and Statehood During the War are Changing 🟥 Serhii Dembitskyi, a member of the CSSBE Council, corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and Doctor of Social Sciences, Deputy Director of the Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Ukraine, discusses Ukrainians' attitudes toward the functioning of the state. 📌What do respondents think about the future of Ukraine? In June 2024, nearly 25% of respondents remained optimistic and believed that Ukraine's future would improve. 24.2% of respondents believed that the situation would neither worsen nor improve, while 31.3% thought that Ukraine's future would deteriorate. 📌How do respondents assess the effectiveness of the Ukrainian state at this stage? Only 7.3% of respondents in June 2024 believed that "central authorities are coping with almost all of their responsibilities." This is 46.4% less compared to May 2022. 📌What are the living conditions in Ukraine for the majority of the population? The vast majority of respondents in June 2024 considered the living conditions to be generally poor. Interestingly, this figure (in the context of full-scale war) is lower than the 2021 figure, when 52.8% of respondents thought that living conditions in Ukraine were generally poor. 📌What do respondents think about Ukraine's failures and achievements since 1991? About a third of respondents believed that failures predominated in Ukraine's historical path, while 36.4% of respondents in June 2024 believed that failures and achievements balanced each other out. 9.2% thought that achievements predominated. 📌To what extent are respondents satisfied with the events currently happening in our country? In June 2024, as many as 71.4% were dissatisfied with the events currently taking place in the country. Despite a significant decline in positive beliefs about state policies and Ukraine's future, the importance of Ukrainian statehood remains key for the vast majority of the population. 🟥 84.4% of respondents stated that the existence of an independent Ukrainian state is very important to them.
