There could be some noisy music on the horizon if, per the FT, there is another supply chain crisis given the looming US ports strike…too much demand, not enough supply, rate cuts, you get it. Early in 2015 we were given an ultimatum by our business partners Schnitzer Steel, either buy us out or we will be buying you out… the marriage was officially over. Donald Trump was running for President and it wasn’t lookin good for him, the economy, or the scrap business, as commodities were getting crushed. Meanwhile, Brian Ferguson and I went to work daily trying to figure out how to get someone to loan us the money to buy out Schnitzer during a time period we were losing $mils + on paper, but we believed we had a chance to turn the ship around if the commodities markets could catch a break. It was a hard time period in our business for sure, but we never got discouraged. We just kept pushing and eventually a bank loaned us $2million bucks and after a year of negotiating we bought Schnitzer’s 50% back and off we went… back to work! Then to shock the world Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton and the markets changed in 2016. Our business changed as well and we never looked back. We made enough in 2016 to pay back the bank for the purchase :) 2014-15 were really fvcking hard years, years where we could have folded up sold our business and moved on…. But we didn’t. We kept fighting, we kept pushing, we kept grinding and believing in our team and ourselves. It’s only over when you quit. Don’t be afraid to cross over to that next level… you won’t regret it. How much of starting a business comes down to your willingness to just be uncomfortable and just start it? I met an asphalt contractor the other day who's been in business for over 20 years. How did he start his business? He saw a pothole in front of a Big O Tires store, walked in and said, “I can fix that pothole for $300.” They agreed. He drove to The Home Depot, bought $60 of material, and filled the hole. If you want to start a business, start selling and doing…not overanalyzing.

This is an interesting example of how a successful family business has maintained a unique policy to avoid conflicts. ValueMax’s founder, Yeah Hiang Nam, has his three children holding key leadership roles across marketing, risk management and operations. Furthermore, decision-making is democratic while disputes are settled through majority votes. However, the company has a strict “no in-laws” policy to avoid potential conflicts from differing family cultures. While this seems like an attractive policy to some, it’s hard to imagine this wouldn’t create some tensions with extended family members. What do you think?
