Transform recently completed a nearly yearlong process to create a strategic plan to guide our work for the next four years. The Strategic Plan is live on our site, and we invite you to read it — it’s a pretty fun read, and concise to boot. The IET last week released an updated #strategy. Our audiences, strategic themes and societal challenges remain unchanged. We've added our objectives and what we want to achieve as an organisation at the start to emphasise its importance. We've focused on two overarching societal challenges - #sustainability and #digitalfutures. The Thought-Leadership and Policy strategic theme has had most revision to reflect the recent strategic review in this area.

Policy Design is the meticulous blend of traditional policymaking with complementary ideas and principles from the world of design. At Lighthouse we have developed a Policy Design Framework to articulate what Policy Design is and how policy teams can incorporate it into their work. Before we get into the practical application, we wanted to establish the foundations first; the core principles of Policy Design. [The four core principles of Policy Design] 🎤 Amplify diverse voices Gaining a deep understanding of the people affected by a policy issue is crucial. We need more than formal consultation; we need to integrate the lived experiences of those impacted by policy issues into the policy development process. By actively engaging with diverse voices, we ensure that policies are more inclusive, representative, and, above all, successful. ⚖️ Bring balance Ensuring diverse stakeholder views are incorporated into the policy process facilitates an inclusive and balanced dialogue. Policymaking involves complex concessions and competing priorities (politics, environment, economics, etc.). Balancing these elements leads to more equitable and sustainable outcomes. 💡 Catalyse insight Combining qualitative and quantitative research captures a wide array of data and forms a robust evidence base. This evidence base guides the development of ideas, prototypes, and blueprints. By catalyzing insights from various sources and selecting the right policy levers, we can develop more informed and effective policies. 🌍 Drive positive change Translating research into results is the most important part of Policy Design. This is where policy intent is rendered into services, products, and other interventions. Driving positive change ensures that policies are not only well-designed but also effectively implemented and impactful. Keep your eyes peeled for more details about *how* we leverage these principles to create policies that are inclusive, balanced, insightful, and transformative. #PolicyDesign #PublicPolicy #Innovation

🧠 What is systems thinking? ↳ An alternative to the traditional linear approaches studying isolated parts of a system and assuming they explain the behaviour of the whole. 🧐 Why are traditional approaches inadequate? ↳ Because they tend to advance our knowledge of a system but not our -understanding- of it. 💡 Instead, they focus on predictable "cause and effect" outcomes, which is inadequate for studying complex systems with non-linear dynamics and feedback (aka, all our systems!). 🤔 So, what's the alternative? ↳ Addressing complexity requires shifting from viewing systems as collections of parts to seeing them as interconnected wholes. 🕸 Systems thinking facilitates this shift, inviting us to view phenomena as interconnected and making complexity the norm. 🤯 Why is this needed? ↳ Because it prompts us to consider the underlying mechanisms driving system behaviour and go beyond addressing surface-level symptoms, which may cause unintended consequences in the long term. 👀 Stay tuned for my next post, where I break down the key principles of systems thinking. #Sustainability #SustainableBusiness #SystemsThinking #SystemsChange --- 👋🏽 If you're new here, I'm Vanessa! I work at the intersection of sustainability, regenerative leadership, systems thinking, and purpose-driven business to catalyse change across systems.
