As a leader in health and nutrition, we’re proud to have supported the newly released Manifesto for Accelerated Action on large-scale food fortification. The deficiency of essential micronutrients such as vitamin A, iron, and zinc increases the risk of death, disabilities, and severe and longer-lasting illness, particularly in children and women of reproductive age. The Manifesto supports global efforts around the World Health Assembly's resolution to prevent micronutrient deficiencies by strengthening the delivery of safe and effective food fortification. It outlines 10 key evidence-based recommendations to accelerate impact and guide stakeholder commitments, from now until 2030. 🙌 Curious? I cannot express how much I enjoyed moderating this panel on scaling food systems interventions, with a focus on the private sector. A big thank you to Jenny Walton, Sneha Kanneganti, and Meera Shekar and a big congratulations to the #ScallingComminityofPractice for their successful Annual Forum. I encourage you all to check out their great work. For those who need a TLDR version of the webinar: Speakers advocated for a united approach among governments, businesses, and NGOs to transform food systems into sustainable, health-centric networks. They argued that common goals already exist, but the language and collaborative approaches necessary to facilitate partnership may be lacking. Nonetheless, each speaker provided examples of the creation of shared values and common purpose. Together, they proposed a shift towards cooperative engagement as a potential catalyst for redefining global nutrition strategies, turning them into a collective journey aimed at achieving better health outcomes for millions worldwide. https://lnkd.in/ecTpTXpf

WHAT DOES NPR CONSULTING STAND FOR? At NPR Consulting our mission is to bridge the gap between academia and the food industry so nutrition advice resonates with the general public. N = Nutrition. We believe in the power of healthy eating, focusing on foods that make you feel good, boost your mood and energise you. We don't focus on counting kilojoules or calories, but rather eating foods mindfully that make you and your family feel good. P = Policy. We respond to policies to support the businesses we represent. This includes ensuring evidence on a topic is up-to-date and relevant, collated efficiently and summarised succinctly to drive your agenda. Beyond food industry submissions, we advocate for dietary guidelines and policies that consider gender equality in traditional roles, food literacy, whole foods over processed foods and food security for all. R = Research. Everything we do is underpinned by scientific research and evidence. Our commitment to being evidence-based means we not only apply research but also conduct research in academia to continually learn, adapt, and provide the best quality evidence and research techniques for you and your organisation. Finally, we also strongly believe in education. We believe in the power of knowledge sharing online and at in-person events, where everyone's experiences and insights are welcomed and celebrated. As we dive into transforming #foodsystems, it's crucial that our policies reach every corner of a country. Why? Because change works best when everyone's included. Check out how Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is making strides in this with real examples from two countries. https://lnkd.in/eEbz6kcP

3ie Working Paper The effects of food systems interventions on women’s empowerment: a rapid evidence assessment The authors of this report summarize the available evidence on the effects of food systems interventions on women’s empowerment through a rapid evidence assessment. The body of research on the effects of Food Security and Nutrition interventions on women's empowerment is sparse and unevenly distributed, and the most studied interventions are those related to the food supply chain, followed by consumer behavior and food environment interventions. Meta-analyses revealed a small, yet statistically significant positive effect of FSN interventions on women's empowerment, particularly from food supply chain interventions, showing moderate effects on collective action, leadership, empowerment indices, and access to economic resources. Consumer behavior interventions also demonstrated positive effects on economic resource access and decision-making. No significant negative effects were found, though some outcomes had insufficient data for assessment, especially for consumer behavior and food environment interventions. Examination of potential sources of variation yielded minimal learning, likely due to limited evidence in certain intervention categories or missing data.

#SustainableFoodSystems (for People, Planet, and Profits) and making it into many different fora. After 25+ years of working on the topic, I am pleased - but didn’t think it would take this long for people to catch on! We have a lot of catching up to do now. Let’s take our actions in the right direction, solutions abound. The book I wrote 20 years ago and revised 10 years ago is still relavent, though it is time for me to modernize it. Maybe that is my next step in life. Still figuring it out. *Sustainable Nutrition Manual: Permaculture for Healthy Planet & People* World Food Programme, Free manual, flyers, drawings, and poster highlighting 600 foods in Malawi for all the nutrition we need every day of the year. Congratulations to Helen Keller Intl superstar Pooja Pandey Rana for her excellent plenary session on Day 3 of #D4N2024 her presentation, titled "Approaches to Connecting the Dots Around Food Systems and Nutrition: Evidence to Policy and Action" delved into the multifaceted challenges facing Nepal's food systems, with a particular focus on the inequities and barriers that disproportionately affected marginalized groups. Drawing on a practitioner's perspective, the presentation highlighted the complexities of implementing multisectoral nutrition strategies. Pooja advocated for developing and utilizing practical, context-specific tools to bridge the gap between research and practice. She proposed 3 actionable solutions to better connect evidence, policy, and action by simplifying frameworks and prioritizing interventions that were tailored to local contexts and needs. The theme of #WorldFoodDay2024 is a “Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future”. This is at the core of the #NutritionDialogues Almost 60 Nutrition Dialogue events have already taken place around the world. They elevate the perspectives of women, children and young people, farmers, faith leaders and more on what is needed to end malnutrition and hunger for all. Some important themes are already emerging from the dialogues: 1️⃣ Access to nutritious food is a local challenge. We hear of acute needs and the daily struggle to meet them in many families. 2️⃣ Children and young people are sharing well-developed proposals for actions. These are meaningful and will make a difference. 3️⃣ Children do what they can to avoid blaming their parents and guardians who they know try so hard and face many challenges. 4️⃣ The agency of women is critical. Women who marry early have to meet multiple obligations and that makes it hard for them to exercise agency regarding their children’s nutrition. 5️⃣ We need to hear more ideas and suggestions from Indigenous Peoples. Together with our partners World Vision, SDG2 Advocacy Hub, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), SUN Civil Society Network we welcome everyone to get involved. We are pleased to announce the release of a Manifesto for Accelerated Action on large scale food fortification. In April, a dedicated group of over 240 practitioners in large scale #FoodFortification convened in South Africa to analyze barriers to progress and identify critical steps to accelerate action. The manifesto captures the collective ambition of these practitioners and offers 10 key evidence-based recommendations to drive progress from now until 2030. This important document supports global efforts around the World Health Assembly's (#WHA76.19) resolution to prevent #micronutrient deficiencies and #NTDs through safe and effective food fortification. As we approach the one-year anniversary of this significant resolution, the manifesto serves as a guidepost to steer stakeholder commitments. In a world increasingly challenged to meet the nutritional needs of vulnerable populations, there is no excuse for inaction. We invite you to read, share, and join us in turning these recommendations into reality. 🔗 to learn more: https://ow.ly/IYpH50RzX9V Illustration: Patti Dobrowolski Saskia Osendarp Shawn Baker Helen Keller Intl Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) Lawrence Haddad CMG Nutrition International TechnoServe Millers for Nutrition Food Fortification Initiative (FFI) SDG2 Advocacy Hub Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement Iodine Global Network UNICEF USAID Advancing Nutrition USAID Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
