Where did the Dragon Boat Festival come from?
It has been rumored throughout history that it was Qu Yuan;
It's ridiculous that if it's big, the mighty Miluo River,
But it cannot wash away Qu Yuan's injustice.
Historical and Cultural Significance
The festival has a history of over two thousand years and is associated with various legends and traditions. One of the most popular legends is that it commemorates the death of Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet and minister who drowned himself in 278 BCE to protest against corruption in the imperial court. Villagers are said to have raced out in boats to save him or recover his body, which is believed to be the origin of dragon boat racing.
Traditional Activities
The Dragon Boat Festival is marked by several traditional activities:
Dragon Boat Racing: This is the most iconic activity, where teams paddle long, narrow boats decorated with dragon heads and tails. The races are a major spectacle and are believed to have originated from the attempts to rescue Qu Yuan.
Eating Zongzi: These are sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves, traditionally thrown into rivers as offerings to the Dragon God and to prevent fish from eating Qu Yuan's body.
Drinking Realgar Wine: This wine is believed to ward off evil spirits and diseases.
Hanging Mugwort and Calamus: These plants are hung on doors to repel insects and evil spirits.
