By travelling to Hangzhou, China, to present its 2024/25 Métiers d'art collection, the House is exploring an essential component of Gabrielle Chanel’s imagination: the Chinese lacquer screens that inspired her all her life, and that still adorn the walls of her apartment at 31, rue Cambon in Paris. The one in her office depicts the city of Hangzhou and its legendary lake. In a film starring House ambassadors Tilda Swinton and Xin Zhilei, and newly appointed House ambassador Leah Dou, director Wim Wenders imagines a contemporary and poetic journey through the Coromandel screens so dear to Gabrielle Chanel. Since 2002, each CHANEL Métiers d'art collection celebrates the savoir-faire of the Maisons d’art at 𝘭𝘦19M, bringing together embroiderers, feather workers, paruriers, goldsmiths, pleaters, shoemakers, hatters and milliners, and bearing witness to the historic commitment of CHANEL to this exceptional craft heritage. The film of the show will be revealed on Tuesday, December 3rd 2024 at 2pm, Paris time.
A poetic fusion of art, heritage, and modernity—this teaser is pure brilliance 💫
I have read extensively about Gabrielle Chanel and her remarkable ability to uncover beauty amidst a chaotic world. Throughout her lifetime, she witnessed France and Europe endure profound and often devastating transformations. Yet, during these tumultuous times, she revolutionized the fashion industry, reimagining it and crafting beauty in bold, innovative ways. This advertisement captures that very philosophy. It does so with elegance and a touch of curiosity—qualities I associate with Chanel based on my readings. Kudos to the marketing team behind this creation. While I’m not entirely convinced about integrating Hollywood into Chanel’s universe, this piece stands out as thoughtful and compelling. Well done. 🐉
✨ Inspired by Chanel’s innovation and craftsmanship in the fashion world! At NGCO2, we believe that sustainability and elegance can go hand in hand. We’d love to explore collaborations that combine style with environmental responsibility. Together, let’s illuminate the future of fashion! 🌿💼
From a personal perspective, Chanel's decision to focus on Hangzhou is indeed a very thoughtful choice. Hangzhou's West Lake has been closely linked to traditional Chinese culture since ancient times. Its aesthetics and sense of history are very consistent with Gabrielle Chanel's artistic vision. In particular, she loves Chinese lacquer screens. It can be said that this cross-cultural integration not only respects tradition, but also injects new inspiration into modern fashion
CHANEL’s 2024/25 Métiers d'art collection beautifully bridges past and present by drawing inspiration from Gabrielle Chanel's beloved Chinese lacquer screens. With a poetic film directed by Wim Wenders and starring House ambassadors, this celebration of craftsmanship and heritage underscores CHANEL's commitment to artistry and innovation. A stunning homage to Hangzhou and the Coromandel screens.
This is truly amazing! As a proud Trans Supermodel standing at 6’3”, I dream of gracing the runway in the near future or stepping into the spotlight as a key makeup artist for upcoming projects and red carpet events. With over a decade of experience in the beauty industry as a celebrity makeup artist in Los Angeles, CA, I’ve had the privilege of working with luxurious brands and fashion designers. My journey spans roles at Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, MAC Cosmetics, Sephora, and currently as a freelancer in Washington, DC. I’m excited about the opportunities ahead to continue elevating beauty, artistry, and inclusivity in the fashion and beauty world!
This film reminds me of my days in Hangzhou, days drenched in a gentle drizzle. Chinese literature is replete with poems describing the beauty of Hangzhou. One of my favorites is "水光瀲灧晴方好,山色空蒙雨亦奇." This translates to, "The lake shimmers in the sunlight, a breathtaking sight. The mountains, veiled in mist and rain, present a truly remarkable scene." This perfectly captures the essence of the film's setting.
Her Coromandel screens were more than decorative—they were a bridge, a reflection of her ability to see beauty beyond borders. This journey to Hangzhou feels like a poetic continuation of her vision, blending East and West, the tactile and the intangible. True luxury lies in this dialogue—a reverence for craftsmanship that transcends time and culture. It’s this bridging of worlds that shapes the art and soul of our era. Bravo, Chanel.
