It's time for Oliver Macks yearly roundup! It will be hard for anything to beat the highlight of bringing Norman more regularly into the office! With Laura taking the bold step into a new career at the civil service in August, we had to have Norman in the office more often. Although Laura is still supporting us, her move also meant we had space for a Finance Assistant, and Henry (Mack!) joined the team – a huge highlight 🎊. The variety of our work means we are constantly challenged, and personally, I learn so much as we go. Our longest-standing client, Good Growth , invited us back to spend time with their senior leadership team in Birmingham, and I loved how they are so open and friendly in a challenging and ambitious environment 💡. We’ve spent hours and days with Local Authorities - Westmorland and Furness Council, Durham County Council , South Tyneside Council and Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council and, more recently, were invited to support the NHS Leadership Academy 💙. We’ve covered topics as diverse as vision, leadership, delegation, change, team development, Learning Disabilities, Mental Health, Social Care, Early Intervention, and had the chance to try our hand at small business support. This last one was a real challenge and so enjoyable – we hope to do more in the New Year! Across the course of the year, it isn’t the specific clients that are the highlights but the invitation to be part of their work for a brief time. Each challenging conversation, relationship-building session, systems mapping exercise, and action plan is a highlight for me 🌟. In the office, we didn’t just have the change of Norman becoming a team member, but we had to cope with Bianca leaving! She had a good excuse (baby😊), and welcoming Anna and Kaia (baby Bianca) to the team made it easier. Towards the end of the year, it was brilliant to join up with Alliance Manchester Business School again and support their leadership development work for WCC in Shanghai 🌏. Then, I returned to our second-longest partnership with CPI. They are such an incredible organisation, and I never cease to be amazed by the breadth and complexity of their innovation work. The most recent, of course, is the partnership they developed with the Darlington Economic Campus, where they asked us to design and deliver a strategic leadership programme. The final hoorah was with the Durham Digital Services team, who took the bold step of holding themselves accountable and asking us back to check their progress. It makes it all worthwhile to see people taking their transformation work so seriously 🙌. A big thanks to all our clients, and especially our coaching clients, who really put their trust in us for challenge and support.

My final set of takeaways from the most recent Best Companies Live event were provided by ‘red chair alumni’ ie previous panellists. Which idea might work at your organisation? believe housing bill fullen OBE, former CEO of the largest housing association in the North East, aired three initiatives: 1. Little Book of Balance A printed item, now in its third edition, the book is given to all staff and curated by many of them too. Whilst many of believe’s tenants are dealing with some very challenging situations, so are believe colleagues. The company needed to invest more in their wellbeing too. In addition to expert advice in the book, colleagues contribute their own tips on areas such as finance, mental health, keeping fit, menopause management and eating healthily on a budget. 2. Free entry to local tourist attractions Recognising the importance of time off for their people, believe have also negotiated with local tourist attractions and obtained free entry for colleagues with their families. 3. Flash mentoring Sometimes people just need to talk to an expert briefly - a short and sharp spot of mentoring from a colleague. Within believe’s workforce there are 5 generations, from school leavers to pre-retirement. Each has different learning styles and needs so believe is modernising its L&D approach to reflect this, making it far more personalised. Enfuse Group Changed job titles from line managers to career coaches. Subtle tweak yet so impactful. Co-founder & CEO Graeme Curwen of the digital transformation consultancy feels the term ‘manage’ has connotations of control vs ‘coach’ which is more about supporting. The only management we can do is of ourselves. So it reset the conversation from “I’ll tell you how you’re performing” to “I’m going to help you develop”. The company also aligned cohorts in different areas eg Academy for junior coaches, creating communities within which they learn from each other. Curo A vast range of skills is required across the Bath-based housing association and house-building company. Jane Smith, Chief People Officer, explained how they’d created a comprehensive portfolio of management, leadership and technical training all in one place. They’ve forged partnerships with local universities for accredited professional qualifications too. Another fan of the business strategy on one page, Curo refer to the 'Golden Thread' – ensures colleagues understand all the skills needed to build the organisation of today and for tomorrow and how Curo are there to help them do so. And that's a wrap! So many gems from leaders of Best Companies within one day. Big THANK EWE to all who shared so openly and to all involved in the production of this event. #bestcompanieslive #leadership #organisationalhealth

In the final Quarterly Renewal of the year in 2023 my team reminded me that we need to pause and celebrate big moments. In a hyper growth, super entrepreneurial company sometimes we fly right past the big accomplishments and into the next cool and strategic project. This time, we paused for a morning champagne toast, and mimosas of course, to celebrate a huge moment for Team Exit Planning Institute, our community, and our profession. Last week we completed a near 12 month long project by launching the results of the 2023 National State of Owner Readiness Survey during our State of the Institute Address. A milestone moment for Team EPI, for our EPI Community, and our profession overall. A wildly impactful and meaningful moment. Cheers! To my team, to our CEPAs who form, evolve, and pioneer our profession, to those CEPAs who invested in the profession 10 years ago when there was only 200 of us, our industry partners and thought leaders, and all advisors within the profession of exit planning. 10 years ago exit planning was barely known. Today, owners indicate they are not only more educated and aware, but putting action behind it. As such they are more preparded and ready than ever before. Check out the results at www.2023ownerreadiness.com A special thanks to those who formed the original readiness survey. My father Christopher Snider, CEPA, and dedicated CEPAs Patrick C. O'Brien, and the author of the original report Chris Cooper. And the organizations who supported it, PNC, Grant Thornton LLP (US), and the Ohio Employee Ownership Center. Cheers to you! #leadership #community #research #exitplanning #exitstrategy #valuecreation #valuegrowth #businessowners #businessadvisors #valuation #accounting #financialplanning #wealthmanagement #familybusiness #successionplanning

It was a pleasure helping former CEO David Clark get “Board Ready.” If you’re in the C-Suite and considering board service with public or private companies, as David says, it pays to start early, be patient, put the effort into networking, and work with outside resources who can provide “challenge and new thinking.” Read David’s story in his own words in our latest case study article. https://lnkd.in/dSU-QRKh #NavigateForward #BoardReady #CareerPlanning

Has October come round unusually quickly this year? Or have I simply forgotten how fast that happens? In many ways, this is a great time of year. There's a feeling of pace and momentum, lots of opportunities to connect with each other at events, and a sense of anticipation about new year - which is just around the corner. It's also that time of year when many of us will be working hard to complete this year's deliverables ... and firmly intending to get a head start on the year ahead. There are plenty of ways to do that - small projects that can pack an outsized impact by cutting through the busy work to identify key priorities and opportunities, or by bringing clarity to new developments or issue areas. But protecting the time and headspace, even for small projects, can be hard amidst the pressures of the day-to-day. Particularly at this time of year. This is where I can help. I still have a few days open between now and the end of the year - enough for a small project or two. What can I take off your plate to lighten the load - and help set you up to hit the ground running in 2025? #bizhumanrights #modernslavery #csddd #responsiblebusiness #corporatereporting

Our thanks to David Clark for sharing his Board Readiness journey. He’s a great example of how helpful it is to start board readiness preparation before you retire. David worked with Navigate Forward’s Patti O’Leary to hone his message, target the right boards, and start professional networking. He has since landed two boards (one public, one private) and is actively seeking a third. If you’re curious about the benefits of board service and what it takes to start the process, read this case study and hear from David in his own words. https://lnkd.in/gPpFVRMx #NavigateForward #BoardReady #CorporateBoards
