2025 Climate Goals: What Should We Focus On? 🌍 As 2025 begins, global climate action enters a critical phase. Facing the growing threat of climate change, governments, businesses, and organizations worldwide are accelerating efforts toward carbon neutrality and sustainable development. In this challenging yet opportunity-filled moment, what key areas should we focus on to advance both international and local climate action? Here are a few directions worth paying attention to: 1. International Trends: The Compass for Global Climate Action 🌟 Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM): The EU's CBAM has become a hot topic in global trade and carbon reduction policies. Other countries may follow suit with similar measures. For export-driven businesses, this presents both challenges and opportunities, pushing supply chains to become more transparent and sustainable. 🌟 Implementation of Net-Zero Pledges: 2025 marks a significant mid-term checkpoint for many countries' net-zero pathways. Expect stricter carbon pricing, renewable energy transition plans, and increased efforts to reduce other GHGs emissions. 🌟 Climate Adaptation Funding: The demand for international funding to support developing countries in adaptive infrastructure, disaster risk management, and agricultural resilience is growing. All eyes will be on whether these commitments are fulfilled. 2. Local Action: Every Step Counts 🌱 Local Business Commitments: It's not just global corporations; local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are becoming key players in climate action. From decarbonizing supply chains to sustainable use of natural resources, every effort can create a positive impact. 🌱 Citizen Engagement and Education: Climate action isn't just about policies; it requires everyone's participation. Start by reducing your daily carbon footprint—use less energy and plastic, support local sustainable agriculture, or join community climate initiatives. 🌱 Nature-Based Solutions: Taiwan's unique ecosystem is our advantage. Local businesses and governments should actively promote nature-based solutions like mangrove conservation and forest restoration, paving the way for climate adaptation. 2025: Thinking Globally, Acting Locally Climate change is a borderless challenge, but action always begins close to home. While international cooperation, policy enforcement, and technological innovation are crucial, the power of individuals and communities cannot be overlooked. 2025 is a pivotal year for achieving climate goals and shaping the future. Today, more than 2.8 billion people worldwide live in inadequate housing, including 1.1 billion living in slums and informal settlements. As governments worldwide act to meet their climate goals, they must prioritize the urgent housing needs of the more than 1 billion people living on the frontlines of the climate crisis. Over the past decade, there has been up to a $174 billion deficit in venture capital for technology solutions to reduce the built environment’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. Given that the built environment already accounts for 37% of global greenhouse emissions, climate action leaders must invest in upgrading and greening informal settlements. According to a recent UN Climate Change Report, less than 1% of climate adaptation efforts currently prioritize marginalized populations. The OECD sited that government spent $20 billion less on adaptation efforts compared to greenhouse gas mitigation initiatives in 2020. World leaders also allocate less than 10% of climate investments to adaptation programmes--this is five to 10 times less than what is needed. The Good Board and London Climate Action Week As an international executive search and leadership firm and B Corp committed to being a carbon neutral business, we believe every organisation and leader has the potential to be both commercially successful and a force for good in the world. We have been following this years’ London Climate Action Week which has focussed on the road to COP30, financing the global climate transition, delivering Net Zero, and mobilising social action. Key messages from this week’s festival have shown positive momentum, with this article really standing out to us “A New Phase for Climate Action” https://lnkd.in/eiNKShpj “Only 10 years ago there was no universal goal for emissions reductions, or a temperature rise limit. No country had committed to achieving net-zero emissions, energy investment was dominated by fossil fuels and electric vehicles were a niche sector. Now more than 90% of the global economy is covered by a net-zero goal and countries are aligning around the 1.5°C temperature goal. Companies are competing for green investment and the energy transition is well underway. “This year investment in clean energy surpassed fossil fuels and is growing 30% every year.” During a time when the public narrative can be so divisive, it is especially important to recognise and celebrate progress – while still acknowledging the scale of the challenge. One of the key themes from this week which has resonated most strongly at The Good Board is collaboration. Collaboration between leaders and businesses working together across sectors and systems to create positive change and to be a force for good in the world. #LCAW2024

The National Climate Change Policy 2.0 aims to expedite our progress towards a greener, more resilient future. This policy serves as a comprehensive blueprint for a new era. It charts a course towards a low-carbon economy, enhanced resilience, and renewed hope amidst a global crisis. It reflects our resolute commitment. Panel 1: ISIS Msia & WWF 1. Leadership in Critical Minerals & Rare Earth: Msia should lead in promoting critical minerals, particularly rare earth elements, to address both environmental & geopolitical needs. ISIS highlighted Malaysia's potential to "punch above its weight" in advocating for sustainable resource management. 2. Blazing the Trail for Climate Justice: Msia should aim to be a “North Star,” pushing for climate justice on a global scale, addressing the geopolitical imbalances of climate action between the Global North & South. 3. Civil Society's Role: Civil society, including WWF, stresses the importance of incl their voices in shaping national policies. The consultative panel with the government provides a platform for civil society to influence policy on reaching net-zero by 2050 & other environmental challenges like forest & mineral management. 4. Transition to Net-Zero: The push to remove coal by 2025 aligns with Msia's goal of achieving net-zero by 2050. However, challenges remain, such as ensuring climate policy is comprehensive & accountable. 5. Challenges of Overlapping Responsibilities: Govt bodies face issues with overlapping responsibilities in managing climate policy, creating inefficiencies. Nik Nazmi emphasized the importance of federal-state cooperation to achieve better outcomes. 6. Regional Climate Leadership: ASEAN should enhance regional collaboration to combat climate change. With Msia chairing ASEAN, the opportunity to push for a unified regional response to issues like rising sea levels & pollution from plastics. 7. Phasing Out Fossil Fuels: missed opportunity in addressing the phasing out of fossil fuels during the discussion, despite concerns raised by the audience. Msia's fossil fuel subsidies are being gradually adjusted, but a stronger commitment to RE is needed. 8. Water & Energy Policy Adjustments: ongoing work to balance societal needs with environmental targets, incl raising water prices & addressing the energy demands of data centers. Msia aims for 100% renewable energy by 2030, with a focus on solar farms & third-party access to energy grids. 9. Climate Finance & Justice: Msia continues to push for climate justice, advocating for fair financial contributions from developed countries. Civil society emphasizes the need for equitable distribution of climate adaptation efforts, esp with vulnerable groups like women & youth. 10. Msia's Role in ASEAN & Beyond: As Msia assumes leadership roles within ASEAN & other intl platforms, it is urged to articulate clear commitments on climate issues & to position the Global South as a key player in global climate negotiations.

Qn: DO YOU KNOW SDGS(Sustainable Development Goals)? 🌎🔥LET'S UNDERSTAND SDG 13: CLIMATE ACTION! Well, Let's talk about something that affects us all: Climate Change and how we can tackle it together. 🤝 You might have heard about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and today we're diving into SDG 13: #ClimateAction. 🤔 WHAT DOES SDG 13 ACTUALLY MEAN? Simply, SDG 13 calls for urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. It's not just about polar bears, but rather it's about: Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions: let's think about the gases from factories 🏭 and cars 🚗 that are warming our planet. SDG 13 urges us to drastically reduce these emissions. Adapting to Climate Change: We're already seeing rising sea levels 🌊, extreme weather 🌪️, and droughts 🏜️. SDG 13 pushes us to prepare for these changes and protect vulnerable communities. Building Resilience is all about making our communities stronger and better able, to withstand the impacts of climate change, such as by improving infrastructure and disaster preparedness. Promoting Education & Awareness is highly encouraged; (knowledge is power!) 📚 SDG 13 emphasizes the importance of understanding climate change and the solutions available. This this important because Climate change affects everything, from the food we eat 🥕 to the water we drink 💧. It's an issue that transcends borders and generations. Ignoring it will lead to more extreme weather, resource scarcity, and threats to our health and livelihoods. 😞 Qn;💡 WHAT CAN WE DO? Making Sustainable Choices Reduce waste ♻️, conserve energy at home 💡, and choose public transport or biking 🚲 whenever possible. Supporting Green Initiatives through advocating for policies and businesses that promote renewable energy 🔆 and environmental protection. Educating one's self and Others by talking about climate change with your friends and family. The more people understand the issue, the better equipped we are to tackle it. 🗣️ Getting Involved in Supporting organizations working on climate action, participate in community initiatives, or even starting up one's own! 🌱 This isn't a problem for governments alone – it requires action from all of us. Let's work together to achieve SDG 13 and create a healthier and more sustainable future for everyone. 💚 #SDG13 #ClimateAction Now !#SustainableDevelopment #GlobalGoals #MakeADifference #ClimateChangeAwareness #GoGreen Climate Action Network Uganda UN Climate Change

Synergy Solutions for Climate and SDG Action: 'Bridging the Ambition Gap for the Future We Want' This report of the Expert Group on Climate and SDG Synergy offers the logical next step in proposing ways to break down the fragmentation and silos that prevent transformative solutions. With only 17 per cent of the SDG targets on track, we must dramatically accelerate action on the 2030 Agenda. And we are rapidly approaching the perilous territory beyond the 1.5 degree limit on climate change. As this report shows, it is imperative to address these challenges through a cohesive approach that maximizes benefits and minimizes conflict. A major opportunity for integration lies ahead in 2025, as countries prepare new and enhanced climate commitments under the Paris Agreement in the form of nationally determined contributions(NDCs). These can and should include critical aspects of SDG acceleration, such as more equitable access to clean energy, jobs, better health, sustainable food sources and gender opportunities. In addition, we urgently need investment and integrated funding models that align climate finance with SDG achievement, bridging the gap between funding requirements and implementation. We face an estimated financing gap of up to USD 4 trillion per year to reach the SDGs by 2030 and drive critical transitions. Later this year, at COP29 in Baku, we need to agree on a new target for climate finance and support a just transition that keeps average temperature rise below the 1.5-degree threshold this century. This report builds on the growing body of evidence on the benefits of synergistic policies and action, as spelled out in the expert group's 2023 report and in four detailed thematic reports issued last month, focusing on policy frameworks; financial systems; knowledge and data; and cities. There is growing recognition of the importance of integrated approaches to climate and development policy, yet, as the report demonstrates, fragmentation across governance, finance and policy continues to hinder progress, necessitating reforms for effective and inclusive action. Achieving these goals requires sustained commitment and collaboration. The Summit of the Future in September will be pivotal to creating the policy space for realizing SDG acceleration and climate action. This report shows that we have the solutions to make this possible. We look forward to further discussions among stakeholders at the Fifth Global Climate and SDG Synergy Conference coming up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in September 2024, prior to the Summit.
