𝐓𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐰𝐧: 7:44 𝐀𝐌, 24 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫, 𝐁𝐚𝐤𝐮, 𝐂𝐎𝐏29 After 24 hours of intense negotiations last day, I was among the last few with my fellow advocates to leave the COP29 venue. These long hours were dedicated to ensuring that the voices of our civil society and constituency were heard—even as we spoke last after all Parties. The last three weeks have been challenging, with moments of frustration and limited progress, yet grounded in immense hope and determination. While a detailed summary of COP29’s outcomes will follow in the coming days, I want to take this moment to share a message for the Global South and our allies in the North: 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞. Let’s advocate for equitable representation and funding for African youth at COP29 and beyond. What initiatives are you involved in that support this cause? Share in the comments! Did you know that over 90% of African youth are seeking funding to attend COP29 in Baku, yet many are being overlooked? With over 60% of Africa’s population under 25, it’s crucial that our young leaders are present at this pivotal climate conference. As a young advocate in climate action, I' have witnessed the incredible passion and innovative solutions that my peers bring to the table. Yet, without financial support, many are unable to contribute to discussions that directly affect their futures. This exclusion is not just an oversight; it’s a massive missed opportunity for progress. We need to change this narrative! Here’s how we can make a difference: Ensure young leaders have the resources to share their insights and solutions at COP29. 🤯 Talking with many #youth at #COP28, several of them mentioned the difficulty of feeling prepared for the conference. It’s not easy to stay ready and follow what happens at COP, even if you are present there (and I can confirm this from personal experience). The topics discussed are vast and diverse, the conference area is enormous, and time flies faster than it seems (as always!). 🫠 Despite the high effort put into seeking information, understanding who will be present, and knowing which debates will be held, a sense of confusion and unpreparedness is still present, especially for first-time attendees. Could this be due to a gap in the information system and pre-COP communication? 🌎 For instance, #LossAndDamage is among the hot topics of recent COPs, as evidenced by the creation of its fund at COP27 and its operationalisation during the first day of COP28. So, how many youth were aware of it, and what did they know about it? 📰 What emerged is that the majority of the youth interviewed have probably been influenced by #media coverage in forming their opinions, particularly those with a more general and superficial awareness of the topic. So this brings to another question: how can media better #support youth on #technicaltopics like this, making them more #accessible and #engaging? The objective would be to create #curiosity and develop #criticalthinking, going beyond summarising brief information. 🔍 Find out more about these points in my new article for Rethinking Climate and let me know your thoughts!

🌍 Support Indigenous Youth & Women Leaders at COP29! As the global community gathers for COP29 in a few days to come, to address the climate crisis, Indigenous youth and women have an essential role to play. These voices, especially from communities on the frontlines of climate change, bring crucial perspectives and lived experiences that shape effective, just climate solutions. This year, Spring of the ASAL we’re raising funds to send a delegation of 10 Indigenous youth and women to COP29, where they can contribute directly to global climate dialogues. Their participation and we’ve made arrangements to ensure they meaningfully engage including in negotiations, side events, speaking roles, action days & film screening. This is vital in; • Amplifying voices from the communities most impacted by climate change • Advocating for climate justice and sustainable solutions • Bringing actionable insights and solutions from Indigenous practices We are however challenged due to the lack of funding risking our efforts of ensuring inclusion in this especially critical COP! A Global Just Green Transition at COP29 💚⚖️ Today, Anne Højer Simonsen from Danish Industry (DI) hosted a panel debate at COP29 on how we can make the global green transition more inclusive to women and young people. We wish to extend our heartfelt thank you to the speakers whose contributions and insights can help drive a just green transition 🙏 - Sostina Takure, Coordinator, DanChurch Aid Zimbabwe - Sigrid Friis, Member of the European Parliament, Renew Europe - Sigurd Seindal Krabbe, UN Youth Delegate - Szilvia Lehel, Global Thematic Lead, Feminist Action for Climate Justice (FACJ), UN Women - Peter Vangsbo, Associate Director of Climate and Sustainability Services, Arup - @Ayshka Najib, Feminist Action for Climate Justice (FACJ) Youth Leader Here are three key takeaways from the debate: 📝 Inclusive Policy Making: It is crucial to involve both gender and youth perspectives in policy-making processes to ensure that the green transition benefits all segments of society. Inclusivity leads to more robust and sustainable solutions. 📚 Empowerment Through Education: Education and capacity building are fundamental in empowering women and youth to take active roles in climate action. Investing in education will create future leaders who are equipped to drive positive change. 🌏 Global Solidarity: A fair green transition requires global solidarity, particularly with vulnerable countries. Collaborative efforts and international support are essential to address the disproportionate impacts of climate change and promote equity.
