Congratulations to our Mentor Spotlight recipient for the month of September: Tamara Smith! Tamara is a Pre-K Teacher at Estes Hills Elementary and her mentee shared glowing feedback regarding the support she provides: She has been the most helpful and welcoming person that I've worked with in CHCCS! Although it's only been a little over a month, I already feel like I can ask Ms. Tami for help anytime without feeling embarrassed or hesitant as she is always encouraging and never condescending. What's more, Ms. Tami is also in graduate school, yet she still makes a consistent effort to go above and beyond in her role as my mentor teacher. I truly mean it when I say that I wouldn't want anyone else as my mentor teacher, and can't wait to continue working with her this year (and hopefully for the next few years to come)! Thank you for your support and leadership, Tamara! We are lucky to have you as a member of our team.

Great advice here! Mentorship is one of the most powerful tools for growth, both professionally and personally. I have experienced that having multiple mentors with diverse perspectives allows you to approach challenges from various angles and uncover opportunities you might not have seen otherwise. A mentor isn’t just a guide—they’re a partner in your success, someone who inspires you to think bigger, push boundaries, and grow beyond your comfort zone. As we celebrate National Mentoring Month, take a moment to thank the mentors who’ve shaped us and reflect on how we can pay it forward! Who has been a mentor in your life, and what’s the best advice they’ve given you? Be sure to let them know!

💡"Find a mentor and start a relationship."💡 Mentorship is a topic close to AO Access Steering Committee mentorship representative and AO Past President Jaime Quintero’s heart. "It’s about life and nonclinical competencies, and that’s the context of the AO Access mentoring program: developmental mentoring based on nonclinical competencies that will help you boost your career and your personal development.” His experience with AO founder Hans Willenegger shows the impact a mentor can have on one's career and personal growth. “He opened not only the door, but the gates." 🔗Read the full story here: https://brnw.ch/21wKCT8

Here at the Knight Cancer Institute, we hold our mentors in high esteem! Mentoring is a vital part of the scientific community. Have you served as a mentor? Be sure to include it on your resume or CV. Where did you mentor? When? What level was your mentee—undergraduate intern, grad student, postdoc? Provide a little context to make the experience clear to your reader. Mentoring often encompasses sought-after skills, such as communication, leadership, problem-solving, facilitation, organization, and sometimes even curriculum development. It’s worth noting this experience on your professional branding documents!

As the novelist Iris Murdoch once suggested, happiness doesn't come simply from freedom or education itself. Instead, education expands our minds and reveals the possibilities around us, helping us recognize happiness. With this in mind, I am proud to have renewed my Certified Association Executive (CAE) certification, reaffirming my commitment to continued growth and service in nonprofit and association management. Here's to embracing new possibilities and making an impact as we step into October! ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership

Developing an adaptable communication style isn't just about linguistic flexibility; it's also about cultivating an environment where vulnerability is met with empathy rather than judgment. Dr. Brené Brown's research on shame resilience underscores the importance of empathy in creating spaces where individuals can share their experiences without fear of ridicule or dismissal. By actively practising empathy and adapting our communication to be more “trauma-informed”, we not only validate the experiences of racialised individuals but also empower them to engage openly and authentically. #HealthyConversations,#EmpathyInAction,#MentalHealthAwareness, #YoungMinds
