One word I’ve forced myself to stop saying is engagement. This was tough to do as I used to start the podcast by saying that my purpose is to help you design meaningful, relevant, and engaging learning experiences. Overtime though, engagement has become a trendy buzzword and now everything is “engaging.” What does this even mean anymore? Is it so many clicks, saves, highlights, comments, submissions, likes, shares, or some other kind of interaction? If I push the next button as fast as possible to end a horrible training, you could argue that my metrics say I’m engaged. Of course, all for the wrong reasons, but I’m interacting within the learning platform. When students go above and beyond, then I can make a case for engagement. Think of responding to more discussion threads than required or completing all of the optional learning activities or participating in virtual office hours and break out rooms.
