February 29 is a unique day that comes only once every four years, and it's crucial for software engineers to remember. Here's why, through examples of recent glitches: - In Sweden, the largest supermarket chain, ICA, experienced a failure in card payments, forcing customers to pay in cash. - Colombia's biggest airline, Avianca, printed wrong dates on tickets due to not accounting for February 29. - New Zealand had a widespread issue with gas station payment terminals failing, attributed to leap day software glitches. - A newly released smartwatch by Fastrack couldn't show the leap day date. - EA SPORTS WRC, a racing game, crashed on leap day, with the suggested fix being to change the system's date. - In Japan, a glitch prevented some police departments from issuing driver's licenses. These incidents highlight the importance of preparing for leap day in software systems. As we approach December 31, remember this year has 366 days, which could lead to more unexpected system failures. For instance, a leap year bug caused significant damage to an aluminum smelting plant in New Zealand in 1996. To avoid such issues, use date objects and operations that account for leap years, and never assume February always has 28 days or that a year has only 365 days.
