🚨 Packaging Gone Wild 🚨 This morning, my wife Becky uploaded a picture on social media that she found humorous. Me? Let’s just say my reaction was less amused. 😤 The situation: a few days ago, Becky lost the back of one of her favourite earrings. Naturally, she ordered a replacement. The process? Seamless. Delivery? Fast. Great job to the popular brand for that. But here’s where it all went sideways: this tiny 'spare part', less than a gram and smaller than Pygmy's toenail, (pictured in the small baggy) arrived in a 100-LITRE BOX stuffed with filler material destined for my blue-bin🚮!!! A box fit for a Garden Gnome Legion to ship a few atoms? We’ve all seen packaging overkill, but this one takes the ****. 📦🤦♂️ E-commerce is booming—$4.1 TRILLION (Statista, 2024) per year in revenue! But did you know that 24% of packaging is a complete waste of space? (DHL, 2022) It’s wasteful, unsustainable, and entirely avoidable. Which is why I recently jumped at the opportunity to work for CMC Packaging Automation. We’re transforming how businesses approach packaging, reducing waste by 40% (CMC, 2022), cutting costs, and making sustainability a reality. 🌍✨ Coincidentally, I had just finished watching #BuyNow: 'The Shopping Conspiracy' on Netflix (highly recommend), and then this delivery showed up. Perfect timing to remind us why we need change. My Recent Shopping Trip Made Me Realize a Big Problem – Waste! Recently, I went shopping at a mall and bought some clothes. But after bringing them home, I noticed something shocking: a huge pile of waste generated from just one purchase. From plastic tags to paper packaging, it was all for one-time use, and straight to the bin. This made me think – if just one shopping trip creates this much waste, what about everyone else in the world? How much waste are we generating every single day? It’s clear that we need to rethink how we shop and consume. I’ve started making changes myself: I’ve decided to carry a reusable shopping bag every time I go to the mall I requested stores not to wrap my items in excess plastic or unnecessary packaging.
