Many people believe that the success of an auction hinges on big-ticket items, the reality is that *any* auction lot can be a winner when sold in the right way. The secret lies in the auctioneer’s ability to connect with the audience and create a compelling narrative around each item. 🎤✨ Whether it’s a luxurious getaway or a simple, heartfelt item, what matters most is how it’s presented to the room. A great auctioneer doesn’t just sell the item—they sell the story, the emotion, and the impact it can have. I've seen it time and time again: an item that might seem modest on paper can spark a bidding frenzy when the auctioneer knows how to engage the audience, tap into their interests, and make them see the value beyond the physical item. 🔥 It’s not about having a “perfect” lot, but about understanding your audience and using every tool at your disposal to create excitement. The right energy, enthusiasm, and connection can transform any auction lot into something truly special. So, if you’re planning a charity auction, don’t stress over curating the “perfect” items. Trust in the power of a skilled auctioneer to bring your event to life and make every lot a must-have. After all, it’s not just about what’s on the auction block—it’s about how you present it that makes all the difference! 💪🎉🔨 #CharityAuction #AuctioneerLife #Fundraising #EventPlanning #auctioneer #charityauctioneer

Why Should Charity Auctioneers Should Connect with Guests Before the Auction Starts 🤔 In the world of charity auctions, the auctioneer plays a pivotal role in driving engagement and maximising the funds raised for a cause. One key strategy that can significantly enhance the success of a charity auction is for the auctioneer to get to know the guests before the auction begins. Building Relationships Taking the time to connect with guests fosters a sense of community and inclusivity. When guests feel valued and recognized, they are more likely to participate actively and bid enthusiastically. This personal connection transforms the event from a simple transaction into a shared experience, where everyone feels they are contributing to a common goal. Understanding Interests By mingling with guests beforehand, auctioneers can gain insights into their interests and preferences. This knowledge allows the auctioneer to tailor their pitch and highlight items that resonate most with the audience. For instance, knowing that a guest is passionate about art can lead the auctioneer to emphasize art pieces during the auction, increasing the likelihood of higher bids. Building Trust Perhaps the most critical aspect of engaging with guests before the auction is the opportunity to build trust. Guests are more likely to bid generously when they trust the auctioneer. Establishing rapport and demonstrating a genuine commitment to the charity's mission can inspire confidence and encourage guests to invest in the cause. In summary, taking the time to connect with guests before a charity auction is not just a nice-to-have—it's a strategic move that can significantly impact the event's success. By building relationships, understanding interests, and fostering trust, auctioneers can create an environment where generosity thrives, ultimately benefiting the charity and the community it serves. What to look for when hiring a charity auctioneer 🤔 Selecting the right auctioneer is crucial to the success of your fundraising event. A great auctioneer not only helps maximise donations but also ensures that your guests have an unforgettable experience. Here are some essential qualities to look for: 1. Fun and Engaging Personality: Your auctioneer should bring an element of fun to the event, creating a lively and enjoyable atmosphere that encourages participation. They should be able to connect with your audience and keep the energy levels high throughout the auction. 2. Look for an auctioneer who can entertain your guests with charisma and wit. An entertaining auctioneer can transform a simple auction into an exciting show, captivating the audience and making the event memorable. 3. The primary goal of a fundraising auction is to raise money, so your auctioneer must have strong sales skills. They should be persuasive, know how to highlight the value of each item, and encourage competitive bidding to maximize contributions. 4. An auctioneer with high energy can invigorate the room and maintain momentum during the event. Their enthusiasm should be infectious, motivating your guests to engage and bid generously. 5. A skilled auctioneer can gauge the mood of the audience and adapt their approach accordingly. They should know when to inject humor, when to create urgency, and when to let the audience catch their breath. 6. Choose someone who has experience specifically with fundraising auctions. They will have the expertise to navigate the unique challenges of these events and ensure a smooth and successful auction. Let's talk about the traditional charity auction. Yes, we must 🥴 In the words of Jon McCoy, CFRE, it just might be one of the dustiest tools in the fundraising playbook - and it's rife to be disrupted. And whether you've organized or attended one, I think we can all say we've seen some stuff 😳 Storytime 📖 Years ago I was at a local gala whose ballroom walls were wrapped in 8-foot tables + elusive bid sheets. As the final seconds of the silent auction counted down, two women in all their bedazzled goodness began arguing about who won the final bid on an item. At one point, one woman took the bid sheet and held it over her head away from the other. (Funny detail: the item in question was a botox package) This is not the way. Where was the mission at the center? Why are guests fighting over bargains? Thankfully, someone else didn't just see the problem; they engineered a solution. Cue We Are For Good core value #7: Disrupt. Adapt. Grow. Repeat. And that someone just happened to be one of nonprofit's greatest friends, Seth Godin 🌔 This week, Seth came back on the podcast to talk about innovation + how his new solution - Goodbids - is flipping the script by creating the positive auction that's digital + generative + effective + fun. "Unless you've got drunk billionaires in a room, each of whom is trying to show higher status than the other, your auctions not going to work very well. And it's not going to work very well, because as soon as you say the word 'auction,' you trigger something. And the trigger is, you should get a bargain. You don't overpay at an auction. But the charity doesn't want that - the charity wants people who eagerly pay a lot, not because they're overpaying, but because they're contributing." 🔉Repeating: not because they're overpaying, but because they're contributing. Aww yes. Bargain botox is not the way. Collective uplift is. So Seth + his brilliant team (👋hi Anne Marie Cruz + Jennifer Myers Chua) built a framework + benefits that are shockingly simple: ✅ Understand that EVERY bid is a non-refundable, valued donation to the charity ✅ Highest bidder gets a reward ✅ Every bidder gets joy of supporting a good cause ✅ Charities get more contributions ✅ More donors = more engagements + stewardship + stories + community - oh my! The platform launches later this month, and I hope you'll check it out. No, this is not a paid ad and we're getting no kickback from it - we just believe in it. And believe that upgrading + humanizing the way we connect to our mission is the way it ought to be. Seth shared that nonprofit "needs to upgrade our guts." This is the time for disruption - for trying something new - for being brave - for centering our Why back into our heartbeat. Maybe time to sunset the bid sheets and try something new? Ok, I'm ready. Drop your auction horror stories (or even positive stories!) 👇 Let's elevate this experience together. #impactuprising Thanks for your friendship + belief, Seth 🫶

Sometimes, I receive inquiries from organizations facing a dilemma: their desired auctioneer is already booked, leaving them in need of an alternative for their event. I empathize with these groups because they experience both stress from having to secure another auctioneer and frustration from not always knowing why their preferred choice is unavailable on the date they want. I can tell you why their preferred choice isn’t available and that is because another group knew their date, immediately reached out to the auctioneer and booked them, signed the contract, perhaps paid a retainer fee, and BOOKED THEM. Every auctioneer, emcee, speaker, structures their business in a way that feels right for them and as a result we have different ways of handling bookings. Some auctioneers work on multi year contracts so the organization knows without question that they will partner with that auctioneer year after year. Some auctioneers don’t have or want that type of relationship with an organization so they book things as they come in and don’t think twice if that means they won’t be able to work with the same group year after year. There isn’t a right or wrong, good or bad way to handle this, it’s all up to how the auctioneer structures their business. For me, I crave the connection, partnership, and growth that comes with working with a group over multiple years, because I believe that leads to greater success for the organization, and I know auctioneers who are perfectly content with one time collaborations that never turn into a multi year relationship. Let this be a gentle reminder that while it’s April 2024 and we are in the throes of spring fundraising, groups are booking well into 2025. While that might feel stressful because it feels like things never slow down (they don’t), securing your auctioneer early feels like you wrapped yourself in a cozy security blanket, giving you peace of mind which allows you to focus on other crucial aspects of your gala planning without worrying about last-minute availability issues. #auctioneer #emcee #femcee #partnerinfundraising #nonprofit #bookearly #fundraising

🚨 FREE ADVICE FOR CHARITIES 🚨 Prize selection is one of the most important aspects of any fundraising auction. Although some 💩 will stick to the wall if you throw enough - you shouldn't take that approach with auction prizes. The aim should be to provide prizes that are going to reflect well on the event. Give people memorable experiences to bid on and offer memorabilia that's actually worth hanging on the wall (nobody wants a reserve goalkeepers signed glove from the 1971 Charity Shield). Here are some top tips 💡 📰 Be current. Impulse Decisions work incredibly hard to ensure our prizes are up to date and relevant. This consistently proves to increase involvement in auctions. Take Mark Cavendish and his 35th Tour de France stage win yesterday - his signed display went into our auctions and that very evening sold at events across the country, raising fantastic money for charity. 🌍 Have a wide enough selection. Only have one holiday listed in the auction? Half the people in the room have already been there so probably won't bid. Expand the selection to offer different options and you'll get more bids! 💲 Don't go cheap Cheap prizes - are they really going to raise anything, or are they taking up space? Do they improve the reputation of the event? Are they going to be memorable for the bidder and influence whether they return to the event the following year, plus tell their friends? I think we know the answers to all of the above. We know not all charities are lucky enough to get tonnes of free expensive donations, but every charity event should take a serious look at the prizes on offer in the auctions. It's more than just throwing together what you can and hoping for the best - the allure of desirable auction items can promote a sense of exclusivity, making the event far more memorable and enjoyable for participants. I'll be here all week. will@impulsedecisions.com

Thanks to J.T. Rogan and the Olé Foundation for their partnership! #TestimonialTuesday "The LiveSource App is a platform that I first experienced as a bidder, but as the creator of our University of San Diego collective, I also became an auction host. In the spirit of trying to raise as much money as possible, we ran a live, in-person auction alongside a Live Source virtual auction. We generated as much as 66% more money on Live Source FOR THE SAME EXACT ITEM we auctioned in person. Across all identical items auctioned, we raised over 20% more money using Live Source than we did auctioning items in person. It could not have been easier to use Live Source, and the user interface for uploading and updating items was very user friendly. If you are not using Live Source for spinning up auctions quickly following a big time win or impactful moment for your team, you're missing out. But if you aren't using Live Source for planned events where you'll be auctioning off items typically reserved for in-person attendees only, then you're stuck in the 20th century! Stop missing out on creating more access to more items for your donors, and stop missing out on more money for you and your organization. Use Live Source and realize the benefits of using their platform like professional and collegiate teams all over the country do!" - J.T. Rogan, Olé Foundation
