Welcome to the October edition of NPA/FPA News & Views, where we bring you a curated selection of insights for For-Purpose Leaders. We begin with an important update from the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC), which has followed through on its warning, deregistering 60 of the 70 charities that failed to submit overdue Annual Information Statements (AIS) by the October 7 deadline. This deregistration serves as a vital reminder of the importance of compliance for the entire sector, urging not-for-profits to embrace transparency and adhere to reporting standards. Compliance is more than just a legal requirement—it’s key to maintaining public trust and ensuring the long-term sustainability of organisations that depend on community support. Among the impacted organisations are prominent names like the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Ltd, Change for Good Foundation, and Kids Outreach International. This loss of charity status underscores the serious consequences of non-compliance. Shifting to the topic of diversity, the 2024 Watermark Search International Board Diversity Index, developed in partnership with The Governance Institute of Australia, highlights ongoing gaps in representation across ASX300 boards. By evaluating diversity in terms of cultural backgrounds, First Nations, and LGBTQ+ inclusion, the Index reveals the need for organisations to expand their talent pools and foster innovation through a more inclusive leadership approach. Finally, Adele Stowe-Lindner Executive Director of Institute of Community Directors Australia, urges not-for-profits to rethink their strategies for financial sustainability in today’s challenging economic environment in Leading for tomorrow demands new ways of thinking. She advocates for innovative income diversification, encouraging NFPs to leverage their internal resources and adopt a mindset of launching projects at 80% completion to reduce over-investment.
