A Banner Year For The A330neo? Since Airbus launched the A330neo, the re-engined widebody has been somewhat in the shadow of the A350 which has sold in larger numbers. However, this year, a couple of factors suggest the Trent 7000-powered twin-aisle could score its highest number of annual orders to date. The A330neo was launched at the 2014 edition of Farnborough Airshow. Breaking the record would be guaranteed if China puts pen to paper on an order for at least 100 A330neos. The government in Beijing has been negotiating with Airbus for some time. As it stands, there are some issues to be resolved, but indications are that these are likely to be overcome soon. For Chinese airlines, the order is arguably a necessity if they are to maintain current capacity. Aviation Week Network’s Fleet Discovery database shows the country’s prior-generation A330 fleet has 40 aircraft that are more than 15 years old. With airlines typically retiring their A330s as they reach 19 or 20 years of age, committing to A330neos this year would allow orderly replenishment. In addition to the two scores of A330s over 15 years old, Chinese carriers have a further 72 of the type that are 10-15 years old. Taken together, aircraft more than a decade old account for more than half of China’s A330 fleet. Operators of the A330 in China—typically deployed on domestic or regional trunk routes—are unlikely to upgrade to the A350 as they do not need to spend more for additional range. No Chinese carrier has publicly ordered the A330neo. A previous order for 40 of the type that appeared as being from an undisclosed customer on the Airbus backlog was reported to be from China’s HNA Group. Chinese fleet renewal would be a shot in the arm for the program, but it is not the only factor driving an uptick in deliveries. The A330neo could also be the beneficiary of the A350’s success. With delivery slots booked out for the Trent XWB-powered airliner until the end of the decade, the A330neo now offers something that neither its big brother nor Boeing’s much-delayed widebody programs can match: availability. So far this year, Airbus has secured firm orders for the A330neo from Starlux (3), Vietjet (20), Virgin Atlantic (7) and most recently Cathay Pacific (30), bringing the program’s firm orders for the year to 60. Cathay is getting its first A330neo in 2028, which is earlier than if it had decided to select any other new widebody for this requirement. With options for 30 more A330neos in the future, Cathay’s order is a big win for Airbus. If it is followed up by the consummation of the huge order from mainland China, it will be a banner year for the program.https://https://lnkd.in/guBSsduT
