🇬🇧🇨🇳 UK to expand Pacific fishing patrols to counter China’s maritime moves The UK plans to step up its naval activity in the Pacific, including more joint fishing patrols, as Prime Minister Keir Starmer seeks to show support for US-led efforts to check China’s expanding maritime reach. The efforts will include expanded patrols with Pacific Island nations to respond to natural disasters and counter illegal fishing. Countries such as the US and France, which each have overseas territories in the South Pacific, have announced similar efforts. #UK #China

✒️ The role of the People’s Armed Forces Maritime Militia: Implications for Maritime Security and European interests 🌊 "China’s fishing operations are not merely commercial endeavors, as the fleet also serves to assert Chinese maritime claims and convey political messages and operating under military instructions. A significant component of this strategy is the People’s armed Forces maritime Militia (PAFMM), which functions as a military auxiliary force tasked with collecting military intelligence when deemed necessary. " 🔎 Niklas Swanstrom explores the multifaceted role of China’s fishing fleet, particularly the PAFMM, and its implications for international security. ❗ This paper examines its role and implications for international order security, but also sets elements for Europeans and other regional actors to face this new form of naval warfare. ➡️ Find the paper here: https://lnkd.in/dN44abBR This paper is a EuroHub4Sino Policy Paper, published originally on European Hub for Contemporary China - EuroHub4Sino's website. The IORIS network continues to grow across the Indo-Pacific region. In support of the South Pacific Coast Guard Network, REGEX highlighted the added benefits IORIS provides in regards to a safe, secure and neutral information sharing and collaboration platform. Unlike similar platforms, IORIS users decide who has access to their information, not the platform provider. Together we are stronger 💪

🚢 USS Omaha Joins Forces to Strengthen Maritime Security in Oceania 🌏 On September 8, 2024, the USS Omaha (LCS 12), alongside Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 35 and a U.S. Coast Guard law enforcement detachment, began operations in support of the Oceania Maritime Security Initiative (OMSI). This vital mission focuses on diminishing transnational illegal activities in the Pacific Island nations' Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs), while enhancing interoperability with our regional partners. As part of a Secretary of Defense program, OMSI aims to: Combat illegal, unregulated, and unreported fishing Address transnational crime Protect regional security and economic stability Cmdr. Kevin Smith, commanding officer of the Omaha, expressed, “We embrace the opportunity to work closely with the U.S. Coast Guard to enforce economic policies in the Western and Central Pacific. It’s rewarding to patrol these waters and maintain a free and open region for our partners.” The partnership between the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard ensures effective enforcement of regulations set by the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC), a key international agreement focused on the sustainable use of fish stocks and curbing unregulated fishing. 💡 Why This Matters: The USS Omaha’s advanced range and capabilities allow U.S. Coast Guard law enforcement teams to access some of the most remote EEZs in the Pacific, protecting vital maritime resources and ensuring long-term security in the region. At Trident Group, we understand that collaborative efforts, like the one between the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard, are essential in the fight against illegal maritime activities. With our expertise in maritime security solutions, we support these vital missions that ensure the protection of critical waterways. #MaritimeSecurity #USSOMaha #OceaniaMaritimeSecurity #IllegalFishing #PacificSecurity #NavyCoastGuardPartnership #LittoralCombatShip #TridentGroup #EEZProtection #OMSI #SustainableFishing #SecuritySolutions #WCPFC

South China Sea: Vietnam reef projects and runway may set scene for conflict with Beijing For years China has had an advantage in the South China Sea as its land reclamation programme on reefs of strategic significance created a possible base for large planes and vessels, including navy ships. But the dominance might be challenged in the future as Vietnam, another claimant of the Spratly Islands, known as the Nansha Islands in China,

This latest belligerent move of the China Coast Guard shows a blatant disregard for international law and its intent to escalate the situation. Can this situation trigger the US-Phils. Mutual Defense Treaty? Is this another attempt to test the US-led Indo-Pacific alliance? While these questions are being debated in the halls of power, the Philippines, IMO, has the agency to address the situation. Aside from the MDT, the country must now enhance its crisis management techniques. This can be done by setting the narrative, coordinate with our international partners, and go on a diplomatic offensive. We can now start the legal case against China's destruction of our coral reefs. Domestically, the government must now take a no non-sense approach with the POGOs. The disarming of our soldiers and towing our naval vessels are unacceptable actions. I believe that our ROEs must be refined to address this escalation. Simply put, we have the right to defend ourselves, especially in our own territory! Now is the time for the country to show a stronger resolve. We must take the initiative. Here's the link:

This week, our Editor-in-Chief, Assaf Kfoury, delves into the complexities of the current situation affecting the Red Sea security. Read on to explore the challenges, developments, and implications of ongoing events in this vital maritime region. #yemen #houthis #security #redseaattacks #redseacrisis #maritimesecurity #houthiattacks #middleeastconflict #globalsecurity #internationalrelations #geopolitics #securityanalysis #currentevents Yemeni Houthi leader Abdul Malik Al-Houthi's recent vow to intensify attacks in the Red Sea and the Arabian Peninsula throughout the holy month of Ramadan underscores the ongoing conflict dynamics in the region. These attacks are part of the Houthi movement's broader strategy to support Hamas in its confrontation with Israel, which has been ongoing since October 7. Despite concerted efforts by a US-led naval coalition to thwart Houthi assaults on cargo ships and maintain maritime security, the situation remains precarious. The Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb have become hotspots of instability, with Houthi militants demonstrating a brazen disregard for international maritime laws by targeting commercial vessels. These attacks not only disrupt vital trade routes but also pose a significant threat to regional security and stability. Moreover, the escalating piracy activities off the Somali coast exacerbate the challenges faced by the US-led coalition in ensuring maritime safety and security there. The inability of the US-led coalition to effectively stem Houthi aggression raises concerns about the efficacy of current maritime security measures. As the conflict persists, there is a growing realization that a comprehensive and sustainable solution is needed to address the root causes of instability in the region. Without meaningful progress towards a political resolution and effective enforcement of maritime security protocols, the cycle of violence and instability is likely to endure beyond Ramadan, and maybe to next Ramadan, exacerbating humanitarian crises further and impeding efforts towards regional peace and stability. "Despite past security challenges, recent enhancements in maritime security have significantly improved the safety of Red Sea shipping routes. International naval patrols and the adoption of best management practices by shipping companies have led to a notable reduction in piracy risks. While some vessels are diverting from the Suez Canal due to recent disruptions, the overall sentiment remains positive about the Red Sea's security and its role as a vital global trade route. Alternative shipping routes, such as those around the Cape of Good Hope, may see increased demand, but the Red Sea continues to be a secure and indispensable passage for maritime trade. In a coordinated effort to support international law and maritime rights, the United States, Australia, Canada, and the Philippines held joint air and naval maneuvers in the South China Sea. These exercises focus on anti-submarine warfare and sea passage maneuvers, aiming to uphold freedom of navigation amid ongoing territorial disputes with China. In response, China conducted its own patrols near Scarborough Shoal. The participating nations emphasize adherence to the 2016 arbitration ruling, which invalidates China's broad claims in the region. #SouthChinaSea #MilitaryExercises #InternationalLaw #FreedomOfNavigation #RegionalSecurity
