What's the point of this event anyway? The words of junior member of the event team I overhead at a recent event. An awkward true story that should send shivers down the spines of event planners everywhere. And yet, while everyone involved in an event - organisers, suppliers, the whole crew - should know this, I don’t think this story is rare. Sure, there are usually fancy KPIs and objectives floating around the event, but often, that info doesn't trickle down to the people actually making the event happen. And yet without a clear objective, interpretations of success run wild. A supplier could deliver flawlessly for example, but still be seen as a flop because they didn't achieve some nebulous "event objective." The fix? Define exactly what you want attendees to DO after showing up. This becomes your objective. Then, shout it from the rooftops! Everyone involved, from the planning team to the speakers, needs to know it, inside and out so they understand how their role fits in and how success will be measured. In my case it informs my ideas to help the event, my style, my tone, the words I use when talking to attendees etc. And for event planners, this objective will help guide every decision. Every investment, every piece of content, every delivery style needs to be laser-focused on achieving that goal. What do you want your attendee to do after the event?
