🤖 Building on yesterday's conversation about #suicideprevention, it's hard to ignore the role of AI and machine learning in the mix these days. 🔨 A couple of months back a new paper was published, showing how a chatbot-based app, called Replika, managed to slash #mentalhealth issues by nearly 50% among the surveyed #youth, which included over 1000 students altogether. 🤳 Out of these students, 3% mentioned that Replika played a significant role in preventing them from considering suicide, largely due to the fact that Replika served as a #friend to them. 👥 As we delve into more sophisticated methods of identifying and addressing suicidal thoughts and planning, this study underscores the immense value of having a friend, even if that friend happens to be virtual. 🤔 I'll be honest, I have mixed feelings about this type of data. On one hand, it presents a promising opportunity to assist numerous individuals. On the other hand, it highlights the growing issue of loneliness and the absence of strong communities. I'm thankful for the chance to work with the Mind Blossom team in reintroducing the human touch to communities, while also advising #mentalhealthtech companies striving to utilize technology to enhance mental health and community connections. This recent study explores AI-assisted tools designed to address learning challenges in students with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). The findings reveal that AI tools can significantly enhance social interaction and educational support. Children with NDDs, such as ADHD or ASD, often face additional mental health issues like anxiety or depression. Tailored treatments are crucial to addressing these overlapping conditions and improving their quality of life. While AI tools offer rapid data analysis and personalized recommendations, they also require trained staff and reliable internet, which can incur additional costs. Mental health challenges are a significant barrier for many of my akōnga, often worsened by financial constraints and social stigma. It's heartbreaking when students feel they can't afford professional help or feel embarrassed to say "my family can't afford it". Recent research highlights the transformative role of generative AI chatbots like Replika in addressing student loneliness and mental health. These AI companions offer a neutral, always-available support system, helping students navigate their emotions and providing a sense of companionship. Remarkably, 3% of student users reported that Replika helped prevent suicidal thoughts, showcasing the profound positive impact of AI in mental health support. I am inspired by how these advancements are making a real difference. Generative AI is not just a technological marvel; it's a vital resource saving lives and supporting our students' well-being. #MentalHealth #AI #Education #StudentSupport

A young University of Waterloo student, @RastinRassoli, has made impressive strides in mental health innovation with the development of @Doro, an AI-powered app that addresses critical shortcomings seen in many mental health chatbots. These include the lack of scientific validation, reactive rather than proactive support, concerns over data privacy and security, and the misleading portrayal of chatbots as substitutes for therapy. Doro leverages large language models (LLMs) trained on publicly available therapy sessions and techniques to address common mental health challenges, such as insomnia and anxiety. The app uses specialized LLMs tailored for specific therapeutic interventions, including tools like thought records and reattribution exercises. This isn’t Rassoli’s first foray into mental health tech. He was also part of the team that created Jovi, a mobile game designed to help high school and university students manage anxiety. Doro is already being implemented at the University of Waterloo’s Campus Wellness and in 30 clinics across Canada. It is designed to continually improve by utilizing data collected from users’ questionnaire responses, ensuring it evolves to meet emerging needs in mental health care. I'm gonna get real for a sec here... I *honestly* thought I'd put matching socks on. 😅 It was only when I sat down on the toilet, 30 mins later, that I realised. (No - this photo wasn't taken on the loo... That's gross. 🤣) Let's just say I've had a LOT on my mind lately. Even more than the usual load on my ADHD brain. And, as a result, I've had a fair few mental struggles in recent weeks. But you probably wouldn't know by looking at me from the outside. You'd think I completely have my sh*t together. In reality - 🫣 I've found myself overwhelmed and paralysed when it came to making check-in calls with current and past AI students - for fear of rejection. (Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria is massive for ADHDers.) Even though I KNEW these calls would be valuable on so many levels. 🫣 I beat myself up for hours because I couldn't remember my Outlook email password so I could set up my new computer. Even though I KNEW I'd saved it 'somewhere' safe so this wouldn't happen again. 🫣 I got myself lost driving into the city for a social gathering. And was 30 minutes late. And my evening seemed to downward spiral from there. Even though I KNEW I should have allowed heaps of extra travel time to accommodate. ... And that's just a quick snapshot. I was diagnosed with ADHD 6 months ago - however I didn't *really* know what that meant. Lately, I've been listening to the audiobook 'The year I met my brain' by Matilda Boseley and it's all starting to make more sense. While my copywriting business is almost 10 years old, there were so many vital steps I missed because they were 'boring' and I wanted to jump right in. This time around, with my new business, I have some key people around me for accountability - to ensure I actually implement the best possible systems and processes for success. And that starts with my hubby (the new HumanEdge AI Training COO) helping me set up my new laptop so that - ✅ My Desktop isn't cluttered and only the key folders are visible. ✅ Chrome is set up properly so I don't feel the need to have 100 tabs opened at once... To avoid forgetting something. ✅ My emails have set folders, so I don't end up with over 4000 unread emails and wonder why it's taken forever to Send/Receive. What's the point of this post? Basically just to give you real insights into my life. And that you can take me down from that pedestal, because I don't have it all figured out. My fellow neurospicy peeps would get it! But now I gotta run, because time blindness is also an issue of mine. And I now need to get dressed and out the door in 10 mins! Eeekkk! 😂 #neurospicy #adhd #authenticity
