Advertising is a strange craft. It lives somewhere between numbers and narratives, between data and dreams. Take any successful campaign. Data might tell you what to target: the audience, the platform, the timing. But the story? That’s what makes it stick. Rory Sutherland nails it when he says, “Data can tell you the what, but it will never tell you the why.” And in advertising, the why is just as important. A while back at Wit & Chai, we worked on a campaign where all the data screamed one thing, but intuition whispered another. We took the leap with the story, against the numbers, and it worked. Not because we ignored the data, but because we understood its limits. Someday soon I’ll talk about that campaign. If data is your compass, stories are your ability to teleport. The challenge isn’t choosing one or the other. It’s knowing how to bring them together without losing the magic that makes people care. What’s your take? They’d tried everything: new ad sets, revised copy, fresh creatives… but nothing was moving the needle. Every number in their data pointed toward the right audience, the right offer, the right time.
