🏆 GOOD NEWS: HxA members recently started 24 new Campus Communities, bringing HxA representation to 74 campuses across North America and the UK. Faculty, students, and staff are hungry for viewpoint diversity and open inquiry in their schools. 🎯 With the support of HxA, our Campus Communities have hosted over 100 campus events to demonstrate the value of constructive academic dialogue, and passed or initiated 18 policy and procedural changes on campuses to protect open inquiry and academic freedom. 👥 Our Campus Communities can help members feel less isolated and disempowered when groupthink spreads on campus. Collectively, this network has given us the potential to impact 2 million students. You can help us increase this support to students, staff, and faculty working toward viewpoint diversity on campus by: • joining HxA (https://ow.ly/76R950ToJ6p) • donating to HxA (https://ow.ly/qW0K50ToJ6r) • sharing this post • Learning more about our Campus Communities (https://ow.ly/menW50ToJ6q) #HigherEducation #DEI #CampusCulture #CriticalThinking #AcademicFreedom #InstitutionalNeutrality #EducationReform #FreeTheInquiry #Newsupdates #Educationquotes

A new report from Progressive Policy Institute demonstrates that low-income students in cities with public school choice, such as Camden, Newark, Kansas City, St. Louis, and Indianapolis, are closing achievement gaps with wealthier peers by up to 45%. And in every city that has significantly expanded public charter schools over the last decade, low-income students—whether enrolled in charter or district-run schools—showed notable improvements. FEPS is pleased to renew its collaboration with the student-run non-profit association “Eyes on Europe“ managed by students at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and the Institute for European Studies, ULB (IEE-ULB). Their mission is to provide students with a new vision of European news by producing quality content. In an effort to bring the Foundation closer to a new generation of students and young people, FEPS welcomes the signature of this new partnership convention for the 2024-2025 period. We are proud that this collaboration supports the work of an independent student-led initiative such as Eyes on Europe. The association’s semi-annual magazine and weekly news updates are valuable initiatives that provide young Europeans with insightful perspectives on EU news and feed the EU public debate with university students’ points of view. This is the face of a marathon runner – by which I mean, thanks to the many hours of sun exposure, I’m much more freckled than ever before. Since running the Brighton Marathon over the weekend, I’ve been very grateful for the kindness people have shown in complimenting me on my ‘tan’, and in supporting the National Literacy Trust – the charity to which I’ve been directing any very generous people who asked how they could support me in the run-up to the marathon. I’ve been asked a couple of times why I chose the NLT, and it basically comes down to the fact that my access to reading and books – at school, through my parents’ own fondness for public libraries, and through a childhood bedroom which to this day could only be more full if books if someone invented ceiling shelves (note to self: research) – has in no small part shaped my life today. It was that love of storytelling, how words and sentences come together, the different possible worlds contained within what I read (and wrote) that make me who I am and have given me the career I have today – and thus the LinkedIn post that you’re still very kindly bearing with. Improving literacy levels is one of the most important things we can do to improve both lives and life outcomes. Happier, healthier, wealthier societies have higher levels of literacy. That’s why the work that the National Literacy Trust carries out with children, young people and adults is so important. If you’d like to support the National Literacy Trust, you can donate via my fundraising page (https://lnkd.in/ep_7-qUm) or directly on NLT’s website (either way, I’d be tremendously grateful). Superb news that the initial financial barrier when applying to university will be removed for those receiving FSM. Brilliant work by UCAS The entry grades tool is also an excellent development to increase transparency & fairness. I hope there will be clear guidance to manage expectations of people using it. #wideningparticipation #highereducation #removingbarriers #ucas #university #admissions
📢With the aim of removing the initial financial hurdle to attending university or college, today we’ve announced that UCAS is waiving the application fee for students who are currently receiving or have been in receipt of free school meals over the past six years. 📈 In a recent survey, we found nearly two in three teachers agreed that waiving the application fee would help free school meal students to progress to higher education. This is one of two new initiatives that UCAS has announced today to support disadvantaged students to discover and apply to higher education. As an independent charity, ensuring all students have greater opportunity to explore their higher education choices is at our core and we’re committed to supporting students of all backgrounds to access higher education. ➡️Read about our announcement: https://lnkd.in/e2THj2Vs 📽️ Hear from our Schools’ Lead, Samantha Sykes and Interim Principal at All Saints' Academy, Cheltenham, Liam Wilkinson in our video below.

We are delighted to hear that UCAS are going the extra mile to support young people from under-resourced backgrounds in their journey to university. Changes for next year include: -Making UCAS application free for students who have been in receipt of free school meals within the last six years. -Adding transparency to grade requirements by publishing average entry grades, not just offer rates and grades, so that students can see historic applicants' grades upon admission to specific courses. Our CEO Jayne Taylor says “We strongly believe a student’s ability to progress to university should never be hampered by their personal circumstances. That is why we are in support of UCAS’s important move to waive the application fee for student’s in receipt of free school meals. We are also pleased that UCAS is working hard to improve transparency in university entry grades vs advertised tariff; we believe this will encourage students to successfully match to universities which meet their ability and ambition.” #socialjustice #equity #accesstoHE #topthirdforthetopthird

📢 UCAS has announced new initiatives to make university applications more equitable! Here’s what’s changing: 🔷 Fee waivers: Students on free school meals will no longer face application fees. This is a welcome step in the right direction to ensure that more disadvantaged students are able to access higher education. 🔷 Enhanced transparency: UCAS will provide applicants access to five years of historical grade data, showing the actual A-level and BTEC grades that secured places on courses. This transparency aims to demystify the application process and set clearer expectations. 🔗 Learn more about how these steps contribute to broader efforts in widening access: https://lnkd.in/eurNnhhS
