Our UK Director of Sustainability David Kemp, recently participated in a regional roundtable discussion hosted by Building The Future Think Tank in partnership with Constructing Excellence Midlands. The discussion focused on the Midlands’ ambitious goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Key topics explored included: ✅ The significant impact of embodied carbon in construction materials. ✅ The urgent need for clearer regulations. One regulation mentioned was the proposed Part Z amendment to the building regulations, which would mandate developers to document and minimise the embodied carbon in their projects. David said: “Implementing Part Z would propel the industry forward. However, even if Part Z is delayed, devolved powers that have been granted to the mayoral combined authorities could be used to further this agenda.” Read more: https://bit.ly/3AO8pCe #midlands #netzero #construction

Pleased to share the Construction Leadership Council call to arms! CO2nstruct Zerois calling upon clients to act with the launch of CLC’s Five Client Carbon Commitments – simple, practical steps that organisations can take to show how they are reducing their carbon emissions and by when. The Five Client Carbon Commitments are: 1. Procure for low carbon construction and provide incentives in our contracts 2. Set phase out dates for fossil fuel use 3. Eliminate the most carbon intensive concrete products 4. Eliminate the most carbon intensive steel products 5. Adopt PAS 2080, Carbon Management in Infrastructure, as a common standard Great initiative but worth noting that the sector does need need to wait for incentives or orders from Clients. We are free to pursue more sustainable solutions right now - and we must! 🌍 🏗️ 🏡 ⚡️ #sustainabilityleadership SDG 11, 12 & 13

How do we set a path to achieve net zero in construction? ♻️ This week (29 April), the Construction Leadership Council launched the Five Client Carbon Commitments – simple, practical steps that organisations can take to show how they are reducing their carbon emissions and by when. 📝 So far, Anglian Water, Heathrow, The Lower Thames Crossing, National Highways, Northumbrian Water and Sellafield have committed to this pledge to tackle their biggest contributors to CO₂ emissions during construction – diesel, steel and concrete. Nick Smallwood, Chief Executive Officer of the Infrastructure and Projects Authority said: ''The IPA is delighted to support the launch of the Five Client Carbon Commitments, which is one of the many stepping stones to the UK fulfilling its net zero commitments. 🌱 "A culmination of years of work from leading thinkers across industry, the plan will incentivise manufacturers and suppliers to invest in new green technologies. "These commitments aim to reduce the costs of decarbonisation, ultimately protecting our planet for generations into the future." 🌍 Find out how you can get involved below. 👇 https://shorturl.at/kxTVY

We’re proud to have helped deliver the Faringdon to Blunsdon Pipeline project, enhancing water resilience for residents across Swindon. Working alongside our client Thames Water, we brought efficiency and innovation to every phase of this £59.3 million project. By adopting advanced techniques like Short Interval Control (SIC), deploying the UK’s largest Automatic Butt Fusion Welder, and streamlining operations through digital site diaries, we improved productivity by 25% while maintaining the highest quality standards. Sustainability was at the heart of our work. From protecting local chalk streams and biodiversity with initiatives like native tree planting and owl boxes, to minimising environmental impact during delivery, we ensured this project leaves a positive, lasting legacy for the community and environment. A big well done to Andy Muncer and the team who have tackled the complexities of this transformative infrastructure project, including the installation of 13.7km of polyethylene, ductile, and steel pipes across challenging terrains and two tunnels. At Kier, we’re committed to delivering infrastructure that builds resilience, protects the environment, and makes a real difference to the communities we serve. For more about the project, see Thames Water’s press release – first link in the comments.
