Innovation and Technology are deeply connected. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘆! Consider the Wright Brothers. What elements of their 'Wright Flyer' were new tech? Wood? Nope Paper? Nope Engine? Nope Wires, handles, propeller... No to all. Their innovation, like most, was inspired by a bold idea And created using what was available 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗹𝘆. I'm not anti-technology. I'm pro-bold thinking. 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘱𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨™ So... Look closer, broader, and with an open mind. 𝗧𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀... What three elements can you use together to innovate beyond your obstacles? The passing of David Lynch reminded me of his wonderful take on how to organize your (work)life to stimulate creativity and innovation. Create routines for habitual parts of work/life, so you have more time and energy left to think about the things were your efforts matter most. Which is also the topic of a recent paper (with Bernard Nijstad), where we explore the effects of standardized work on implementing creative ideas. https://lnkd.in/dGdHF587 Without journal formatting: https://lnkd.in/dks6yvAr

Making good decisions isn't about choosing right. It's about framing right. You wouldn't build a house with a crooked foundation. So why make decisions with a crooked frame? Most of us rush to solve problems before truly understanding them: - We see binary choices when there are multiple options - We focus on next week when we should think about next year - We consider our view when we should consider others' views The solution isn't more analysis. It's better framing. Before asking "What should I choose?" Ask "Am I seeing the full picture?" What recent decision looks different when you change the frame?

Change is not top-down, nor is it bottom-up, it is both, side by side. This graphic illustrates the need for both an overall direction and an iterative experimental approach to move in the right direction under conditions of uncertainty and a changing environment. We even have a canvas for this at Si if you want to try it out: https://t.ly/Timby
