1974. A dubious time in history which saw Nixon’s resignation, Ali vs Forman’s “Rumble in the Jungle,” intro of a nationwide 55 mph highway speed limit and Barbara Streisand topping the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles. Also in 1974? Chateau Grand Traverse starting wine production in Northern Michigan. Foolhardy by some standards 50 years ago, CGT “pressed” on with its belief in the possibilities of the Northern Michigan landscape and now celebrates its golden anniversary. Ali boasted he was “King of the world,” but in the kingdom of Riesling, CGT reigns. Michigan’s ‘House of Riesling’ is responsible for +75% of the State of Michigan’s Riesling sales and +3% of total sales in the United States. 2024. A dubious time in history as the wine industry faces off with a Millennial and Gen Z audience who turning from wine to the cheap and sweet of the RTD, Seltzer and flavor-house of the week in the adult bev. Chateau Grand Traverse stands stalwart and committed to sharing its niche in micro-climate, varietal craft-wine making with the staunchest of skeptics, ready to savor the future with a bold blend of ambition and just a touch of sass. #Winemaking #Winebusiness #WineIndustry #50Years #UncorkYourNorth

NAPA’S NEW CRYSTAL SPRINGS AVA APPROVED Crystal Springs of Napa Valley AVA becomes the 18th official appellation for the prestigious wine region. The new AVA slots into the hilly area in a northwestern region of Napa Valley between the St Helena, Calistoga and Howell Mountain AVAs. Crystal Springs of Napa Valley has officially been named an American Viticulture Area (AVA), a designation denoting region-specific appellation labelling that can appear on American wines. Steven Burgess, the former owner of Burgess Cellars, who has historically had contentious relationships with residents and his former winery’s new ownership, spearheaded efforts to create the Crystal Springs appellation. While this marks the first official Napa Valley appellation since the adoption of the Coombsville AVA in 2011, some contest that it may continue a trend of consumer confusion across California’s wines and regions. Sharing a well written article on what makes Mt. Veeder AVA so special in Napa, California. https://lnkd.in/ek3N8Gh8 Here are the key points and takeaways: Mt. Veeder is a unique Napa Valley AVA situated on the Mayacamas mountain range with vineyards planted up to 2,400 feet elevation. Its rugged terrain, steep slopes, and proximity to the San Pablo Bay create a cool climate ideal for growing Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. The challenging conditions of Mt. Veeder result in lower yields but more concentrated, complex wines with distinct rocky, chocolate, and espresso notes compared to valley floor wines. Only 1% of Napa's wines come from this small AVA where all farming is done by hand. While large in area, Mt. Veeder has very few vineyard acres (around 1,000) and accounts for just 1.3% of Napa's total production. The wines are highly coveted for their pronounced depth and intensity despite limited availability #mtveeder #napavalley #winelover #SegassiaVineyard

Vineyard Update: Harvest has been adjusted to 14 Sep. Historically the person who both managed the vineyard and made the wine was called the “vigneron”. In modern commercial winemaking the tasks are often divided between vintner (or winemaker) and vineyard manager or (grape grower). Large wineries may have a wine maker and estate vineyard(s) in the care of a vineyard manager, while smaller wineries might have a vigneron or a vintner and purchase grapes from local vineyards managed by an independent grape grower(s). Feisty Fox Farm and Vineyards provides Vidal Blanc grapes to winemakers (vintners) who use our grapes for their needs. In this arrangement it is important to stay in close communication with the vintner to ensure the grapes are suited for the vintner’s needs. Weather, quality of the grapes and different uses or styles of wine will dictate harvest decisions. Clarification: Yeast is a type of fungus, not a fungicide. It can be affected by a fungicide. #vidalblanc #virginiavineyards #virginiawine #knowyourwine Toni Stinson Josh Stinson
