👋 Konnichiwa! (Japanese for "hello" or "good afternoon.") Have you tried this too?
On a trip to Japan, ChatGPT advanced voice was incredibly useful. Use custom instructions or say: “you are a translator between English and Japanese. You will wait for one person to finish talking and then translate into the other language. You will not add or say anything else” Much more natural than other translation tools, and capable of handling nuances and cultural context.
I've actually been using ChatGPT to practice Japanese for an upcoming trip! I even created a GPT that acts as a Japanese conversation partner (using a prompt similar to Prof. Ethan Mollick’s) and also a language tutor, explaining grammar and cultural nuances. It's been amazing - the perfect balance of theory and praxis. In a world where AI/LLMs can translate anything on the fly, I believe learning languages ourselves, as the custodians and beneficiaries of language, unlocks deeper cultural understanding and connection. I highly recommend exploring how AI can enhance your own language learning journey!
I use it as a translator and as a language teacher, and to just have some fun learning accents as well.
I used ChatGPT voice to practice for my TEFAQ (French) exam. Passed it in one go. This thing's truly a gem.
I wish I had ChatGPT 22 years ago, it would have made my early days in Japan so much easier. I wouldn’t have had to struggle with sign language at the store just to ask for a water bottle. その事日本語全然できなかったね!
It's great to hear that ChatGPT advanced voice was helpful during your trip to Japan. In your experience, what were some of the nuances that ChatGPT was able to capture that other translation tools couldn't?
Use cases that I experienced... And I agree this is just amazing
ChatGPT, the only tool I wish I had growing up.

1moI’m using it for mandarin, also as a tutor where I can just take photos of my textbook and generalize the lesson into examples
