It’s time to benefit more from everything you put into your crops. It’s time to grow more with less. 🌱 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 - 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗜𝗜𝗩𝗢. Our growers coop is always on the look out for potential "cultivar" trees displaying desirable qualities such as enhanced cold hardiness, productivity, pest and disease resistance, and flavor. That includes hazelnut and chestnut trees found in our own orchards. However clonal/vegetative propagation of these (creating exact copies) can be challenging for a variety of reasons. One of our member farms, Z's Nutty Ridge LLC, recently completed a Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program funded research project looking at one promising method for chestnuts, stool bed layering. This involves encouraging new suckers from the base of the tree, and the formation of roots on those before cutting. Their research focused on two particular variables, hormone treatment and timing of when to layer. Read more about this work on our latest blog post (which includes free downloadable user guides explaining how you can do this yourself): https://lnkd.in/eh6Rswup #treepropagation #chestnuts

I thought I would repost this as we still get lots of questions about the "Value" of short term cover / catch crop mixes. There is a lot of evidence that the early vegetative stages of a plant's life is when it is exuding the most Carbon into the soil, so undoubtedly these 8-10 week crops have significant value. Add to that the new SFI opportunities for funding and it is a win:win !! More details about the SFI option SOH3 can be found here - https://lnkd.in/eF9-NZ2U #regenerativeagriculture #covercrops

It's alright God... It's Okay.. Trusting the process can sometimes mean embracing a slower journey. Take cassava, for example, with its growth cycle spanning between 8–24 months. This lengthy period might deter some farmers who opt for crops yielding multiple harvests annually. Each step, no matter how slow, plays a vital role in the journey towards success. #TrustTheProcess #Patience #GrowthMindset

Cover crops provide a range of benefits for farmers. Cotton farmers on the High Plains look at the benefits and try to mitigate some of the challenges the area faces. Lorenzo farmer Steven Chapman talks through his approach in our new cotton course. Grounded in Ag courses are designed to help those new to ag, moving among crops, or simply who have had limited opportunities to learn directly from farmers gain knowledge in this complex industry so many of us love. Changes to pesticide policy will impact #IllinoisFarmers. Learn more in this recent article I wrote for Illinois Soybean Association’s Field and Bean magazine.
Illinois farmers will need to adopt runoff and drift mitigation practices under the new strategy. This could involve cover crops, no-till methods, and creating buffer zones. What do you think about these changes? Dive into the details at https://lnkd.in/gYWRE_Es
