Part 2: Surface Preparation for Plastic Substrates Before applying any coating to plastic substrates, surface preparation is crucial. Plastics like PP and ABS have inherently low surface energy, making it difficult for coatings to adhere properly. To address this, surface treatments like flame, corona, and plasma treatments are used to increase surface energy and promote adhesion. Flame treatment passes a plastic part through a flame to oxidize its surface, creating functional groups that improve wettability. Plasma treatment, on the other hand, uses ionized gas to clean and activate the plastic surface. Corona treatment is another popular method, particularly for improving printability on plastics. Each of these techniques has its pros and cons, and selecting the right method depends on the type of plastic and the end-use requirements. These surface treatments are often followed by the application of primers, which further enhance adhesion and serve as a binding layer between the substrate and the topcoat. Proper surface preparation ensures that coatings applied to plastics perform optimally, resisting peeling, flaking, and other adhesion-related issues. In the next post, we’ll discuss the importance of primers in coating systems for plastics. #Coatings #PlasticSubstrates #SurfacePreparation #Adhesion #Primers #ResinTechnology #EpoxyResins #TestingMethods #UVResistance #AutomotiveCoatings

Dark coloured plastic products tend to absorb sunlight, causing them to expand and contract, which can lead to distortion. Over time, the heat absorbed can compromise thermal stability, accelerate degradation, and ultimately cause the product to fail. Roofline products made from rigid PVC are particularly vulnerable to these issues. However, Astropol's heat reflective masterbatch additive significantly reduces heat absorption. These heat-reflective additives are suitable for use in many polymers, addressing thermal stability challenges and enhancing product longevity by reflecting up to 40% more heat compared to traditionally coloured materials.
