In a world where men have dominated the narrative of history, relegating women to roles as providers rather than operators, complements rather than executors, and extras rather than icons. However, due to centuries of oppression, women symbolize resilience, perseverance, and courage. They have survived rejection and neglect, and despite the tremendous obstacles they have faced, they have thrived: nurturing communities, they have created societies. If it wasn't yesterday, it is now the urgent moment to reclaim that legitimacy. We are the generation tasked with closing the gender gap, advocating for justice, security, equal treatment, and fair and equal conditions. Please, let's fight for a more equitable future. #March8 #March82024 https://lnkd.in/eJApndZB

🌟Exciting news from YSWN! We’ve been funded by Rosa, the UK Fund for Women and Girls to create this video featuring our Audio Equity Champion Ngaio Anyia about why we need to Turn Up The Volume on gender equity within the audio and sound industry. With women and non-binary individuals making up less than 5% of the sector workforce, it’s time for change. We’ve created the Volume Up framework to support the industry to make long-lasting changes based on our life experiences and where we’ve experienced barriers. Our framework includes eight focus areas to help organisations create a more inclusive environment, from recruitment to workplace culture. Each pledge is designed to be achievable in just six months! Join us in making the audio industry a more equitable space for everyone. Let’s turn up the volume on gender equity together! 👉Learn more about how your organisation can get involved: https://lnkd.in/gvg8fSbJ #GenderDiversity #Inclusion #VolumeUp #YSWN #AudioIndustry

As we celebrate International Women's Day, I extend my warmest wishes to all the remarkable women out there. 🎉✨ 🙋♀️ I was fortunate to be raised by strong, resilient women who shaped my values and beliefs. Their unwavering support and determination continue to inspire me every day. In my life, I am surrounded by incredible women—friends, colleagues, and family members—who break barriers, challenge norms, and create positive change. Their achievements are a testament to their indomitable spirit. 📢 However, let’s address a sobering reality: full equality for women remains elusive. Antonio Guterres rightly pointed out today that it might take another 300 years to achieve true parity. This slow pace of progress is disheartening and diminishes our reasons for celebration. Or, as he puts it - this rate of change is frankly insulting. Billions of women and girls face marginalization, injustice and discrimination, as millennia of male domination continue to shape societies. The persistent epidemic of gender-based violence disgraces humanity. Only last week a woman was murdered after being raped by a man in the middle of the European capitol (Warsaw), while nobody reacted. This is not an isolated case, nor an exception in any other region of the world. Over four million girls are estimated to be at risk of female genital mutilation each year. Discrimination against women and girls remains perfectly legal in much of the world. In some places, that makes it difficult for women to own property, in others, it allows men to rape their wives with impunity. Reproduction rights are no longer a given in countries where we all thought they used to be - Women’s autonomy over their bodies is still contested and access to healthcare when needed is denied. Only in Italy, 20% of women never owned a bank account. And it goes on and on. This is where we're at. 💰🚫 And while I see many HR- and senior leaders celebrating the great achievements of their companies in the field of gender equity, the reality, even here in Western Europe, is far from what we all want to hear. The gender wage gap in the Netherlands - the salary difference between men and women performing the same job with the same education and experience - has increased from 5 percent in 2021 to 7.4 percent in 2023. Men appear to have benefited more from wage increases and a good bargaining position in the tight labour market over the past two years, (following Volkskrant report based on the biennial salary survey by Intermediair and Nyeronde). The increasing gap is due to men’s salaries increasing more than women’s. Seventy percent of Netherlands residents received a wage increase in the past two years. On average, men now earn 16.4 percent more than in 2021, while women saw their wages rise by an average of 9.1 percent. 👉 As long as we have double standards, we're nowhere close to equality for all - women, girls, men and boys.

What if male CEOs were asked the same questions as female CEOs? The questions in this video are based on real situations. They point out the unequal treatment of women in positions of economic power. It also calls for a harmonization of issues and equal treatment in order to work towards a true equality of opportunity. It's international Women's Day 2024. Let's make a difference.

Crucial reading, not just for work in the film industry, but for pursuing any kind of creative career in any field of media: “Employment success in the film industry is driven by networks and in the camera department that is, quite specifically, an old boy’s network” (you can add other elements, such as white, middle class, related/connected, urban, well-educated, funded, etc to this list). These are also the same people that continue to insist on ‘meritocracy’ as a supposedly value-neutral reason for the fact that the creative industries are the least diverse, equitable and inclusive fields of work.
If you haven't already been following along - there's been a bit of a ruckus at the annual Camerimage festival. I've been sufficiently incensed I decided to jot down some thoughts on the state of film festivals, feminism and a few things to do with frogs...please enjoy this five minute read...

Check out my blog post. Lyrical Comedy: "Combining lyrical beauty with sharp wit, 'I Am Woman, I Always Shave' is a comedic masterpiece. The poem's vivid descriptions and humorous take on the act of shaving make it a standout piece.
