✨ Official start of my Master's thesis ✨ After thorough preparation and several exciting discussions, I have officially received permission to begin working on my Master's thesis. Now, the real journey begins! In my Bachelor's thesis, I focused on "Theory-Guided Load Disaggregation in an Industrial Environment", which allowed me to dive deep into data-driven solutions for industrial systems. Now, with my Master's thesis, I'm taking on a new challenge: developing an energy-efficient thermal control system that integrates Model Predictive Control with Fuzzy Control. The goal is to maximize comfort in buildings while saving energy. I'm excited to tackle this challenge and contribute to an essential and evolving field. #MasterThesis #EnergyInformatics #SustainableSolutions #MPC #FuzzyLogic #EnergyEfficiency

Happy #EarthDay! As we mark the day by reflecting on the power of collective action, we’re looking at the ways that the College of Natural Sciences at UMass Amherst is playing its part. Members of Polymer Science and Engineering UMass Amherst and the College of Engineering, UMass Amherst’s Department of Chemical Engineering are working together to develop a promising avenue for efficient energy conversion. This can allow for the harnessing of various energy sources, including renewables, and the minimizing of energy losses, leading to cost savings and environmental benefits. This collaboration is exploring a cost-effective, durable, scalable, and efficient method for synthesizing mesoporous nitrogen-doped carbon materials coordinated with single-atom and atomic iron clusters. Findings are described in a new article in “ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eYVkfckn ACS Publications #CNS #UMassEngineering #ChemicalEngineering #EnergyConversion #EnergyEfficiency

𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐭𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧? 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭? This June I participated in the #IMDC conference in Amsterdam. IMDC proved a great platform to get updated on the ship design developments. I presented part of my research titled "Integration of the methanol power propulsion and energy systems’ (EC) temporal uncertainties in a Markov decision process framework", co-authored by my supervisors: Austin Kana and Jeroen Pruyn. This study proposes a design method to bridge two normally disassociated fields by combining the use of (1) Markov decision processes to assess uncertain future methanol EC developments during the vessel lifecycle and (2) a generative probabilistic layout algorithm to quantify the risks associated with the EC systems layout integration. The coupling of MDPs with the probabilistic layout tool proved a method that can account for technical, environmental, and financial uncertainties relative to the various alternative power and energy systems configurations. Using this framework as a baseline, we aim to produce insights for design pathways to be selected towards decarbonization under uncertain conditions. 🌟 Interested to find out more about this study? INTRODUCING: Trienens Institute Six Pillars of Decarbonization - Capture The Trienens Institute Six Pillars of Decarbonization leverage Northwestern strengths to accelerate the transition to a clean energy future. The Capture Pillar aims to create technologies and processes to remove carbon dioxide from industrial emissions and the air. Partnerships with industry are essential to translating the new technologies into practice. Led by faculty co-chairs Omar Farha and Randy Snurr, the pillar brings together expert faculty from across Northwestern University and collaborators to develop solutions and innovative approaches.
