I am very happy to announce the publication of my second peer-reviewed paper, titled 'Low-Thrust Fuel-Optimal Guidance with Automatic Control Sequence Detection and Separation', in the Journal of Guidance, Control and Dynamics, which is now available online: https://lnkd.in/g6eSb9yw. Many thanks to my supervisors Roberto Armellin and Laura Pirovano for their guidance throughout this work. For fuel-optimal guidance algorithms, the ability to completely change the control sequence in response to unexpected deviations presents a significant challenge. The inability to handle such necessary changes can result in failure to reach the target. This research builds upon and leverages certain properties of the differential algebraic techniques we have been developing to automatically detect and separate different optimal control sequences that may occur during an interplanetary transfer, ultimately providing great robustness against uncertainty. This research was undertaken during my PhD studies at Te Pūnaha Ātea - Space Institute. I'm looking ahead to (hopefully) the next publication and subsequent wrap-up of my PhD!

October 26th: Honoring Thomas Martin Lowry and His Impact on Chemistry and Space Science Today, on October 26th, we honor the legacy of Thomas Martin Lowry (1874–1936), a visionary chemist whose work fundamentally transformed our understanding of acids, bases, and chemical reactions—paving the way for advancements across multiple scientific disciplines, including space science. In 1923, Lowry, alongside Danish chemist Johannes Nicolaus Brønsted, developed what is now known as the Brønsted-Lowry Theory of Acids and Bases. This theory redefined acids as proton donors and bases as proton acceptors, a revolutionary concept that shifted our understanding of chemical behavior. Prior to this theory, acids and bases were thought to behave differently depending on the medium in which they reacted. The Brønsted-Lowry theory, however, introduced a universal framework that could apply in diverse environments, even those outside of Earth. Lowry’s contributions reach far beyond chemistry alone; his insights are foundational to fields like biochemistry, environmental science, and space exploration. In space science, the Brønsted-Lowry model provides critical understanding of chemical reactions in extreme conditions—such as the harsh atmospheres of distant planets or the vacuum of space. This theory also supports the design of essential technologies for space missions, such as fuel cells that use acid-base reactions to generate clean energy, powering spacecraft for extended missions. Additionally, acid-base chemistry is essential in developing life-support systems that balance pH levels, ensuring astronaut safety during long-duration space travel. Reflecting on Thomas Martin Lowry’s work, we see how foundational scientific discoveries can have applications beyond their original scope, enabling us to push the boundaries of exploration. His contributions remain integral not only to laboratories on Earth but also to the expanding frontier of space science and the future of human discovery. #OnThisDay #ThomasMartinLowry #SpaceScience #Chemistry #AcidBaseTheory #BrønstedLowry #Innovation #SpaceExploration #ScienceHistory
