In the fast-paced world of facility management, the role of a Building Services Maintenance Engineer is absolutely pivotal. But what qualities truly set apart a stellar engineer from the rest? Firstly, a top-notch Maintenance Engineer must exhibit a strong technical acumen. It's not just about having the qualifications on paper; it's the hands-on experience of actually troubleshooting HVAC and electrical plant with precision and confidence. This expertise becomes the bedrock of their day-to-day responsibilities. Secondly, problem-solving skills are non-negotiable. Facilities are dynamic environments where anything can happen. The best engineers are those who can think on their feet, devising effective solutions on the fly. They're the ones who can turn a potential downtime into a minor hiccup. Communication is another cornerstone. Whether it's explaining a technical issue in layman's terms or coordinating with a cross-functional team, clear and concise communication ensures that everyone is on the same page, preventing misunderstandings and streamlining operations. Attention to detail cannot be overstated. In maintenance, the smallest oversight can lead to significant problems. A keen eye for detail and a methodical approach to work are qualities that safeguard against potential issues. This includes the recording of PPM's/condition etc. Reach out to me at matthew.soulsby@prsjobs.com to explore how you can contribute to the seamless operation of our client's facilities. #FacilityManagement #MaintenanceEngineering #CareerOpportunities #prsjobs

Did you know that commissioning engineers are the final gatekeepers ensuring building systems operate flawlessly? October is Careers in Construction Month, a time to celebrate and promote the diverse career opportunities within the construction industry. Commissioning engineers play a crucial role in verifying that all systems in a building function as intended, from HVAC to electrical systems. “Ensuring that every system works perfectly before a building is handed over is incredibly satisfying,” says Amy Babon, LEED Green Associate, a field commissioning engineer. Commissioning engineers help ensure buildings are safe, energy-efficient, and ready for occupancy. Are you interested in a career as a commissioning engineer? Building electrical shutdowns, am I right? Key focuses for me after I identify the need for a distribution panel shutdown: Start by making sure you understand the processes within the building. It’s important to speak to all functional groups to be clear and make sure you aren’t missing anything. This not only helps you in the coordination effort but also helps make the building occupants comfortable with what you’re planning. Pull in all the right people to start developing your plan. Building/process engineers, GC/subcontractors, project management team, compliance team, etc. Make sure everyone you pull in feels inspired and has a say in what they think is important. When planning something as critical as a building power shut down, everybody’s input is crucial and one small piece of information could be what prevents you from having an issue day of. Ensure you have a strong safety team to help you review your pre-task planning/job hazard analysis. This is important to do upfront to lay out safety expectations and to also prevent anybody from getting hurt. The electrical contractor should be directly involved in this safety planning. Get all your plans on paper with everyone’s input. I personally start with a MOP (method of procedure) from our electrical contractor which includes step by step sequence of operations along with a detailed lock out plan reviewed and approved by the engineering and safety team. Once we get this approved, we use it to help us develop a “Planned Event Protocol” which is a bigger picture document capturing all building impacts and their associated impact mitigation plans. My favorite part: the morning safety huddle the day of. With strong planning you and your team should feel confident. Make sure to touch on the fact that everything has been planned out from A-Z but nothing ever goes 100% perfect. It’s important that people feel safe and have the power to stop work when something isn’t going smooth or they have concerns. In the safety huddle I like to make sure there is a clear message that everyone has the power to speak up and we all need to communicate to resolve issues and stay on path to complete the scope successfully.
