Earlier this week a friend shared with me a role for an Editorial Intern based in West London, working 9-5. It's looked like a great opportunity for someone starting out to learn about managing an online magazine. But there's a catch, it's unpaid, and you need to bring your own laptop. Travel is covered, but only for Travelcard Zones 1 - 6 🙄 I find it hard to believe that in 2024, unpaid internships are still a thing. Taking up an unpaid role, even for a month, is a luxury only those with financial support from their family can afford. If we as an industry are serious about increasing diversity and promoting #socialmobility, unpaid internships must be abolished. Asking interns to work for free on the premise of gaining 'experience' is exploitative. If interns are delivering work of value then employers must pay at least the minimum wage.

Businesses can try to spin this issue all they want, but simply put, not paying your intern staff is WILDLY unethical. Course credit simply isn’t enough, especially in this economy, and that structure negatively impacts students and entry-level applicants who can’t afford to take on unpaid labor to move ahead in their field. As someone who hired and managed interns for several years (which was honestly the highlight of my job!), their dedication, curiosity, and work ethic is unmatched. If anything, I learned far more from them than they did from me. Interns deserve compensation like any other employee. It’s 2024! Paid internships only, people!! #nationalinternday #internships

Additional point of view: a lot of universities offer financial support for traineeship as well, as long as the students are paid a livable wage while they're doing the internship. So it is a win-win in this case, student gains experience and the company gain a cost-effective solution for their hiring problem 😉

𝐁𝐚𝐧 𝐔𝐧𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬! As a Director, I believe that unpaid internships don't align with fair business practices. Expecting someone to invest their time and effort without any compensation is simply unfair. Fresh graduates, often equipped with degrees and valuable potential, should not have to work for free. Many unpaid interns aren't even reimbursed for basics like fuel, long commutes, or meals. This puts them in a position of covering expenses out of pocket, all for "experience" that might not significantly advance their careers. For those with real financial responsibilities, unpaid internships are not feasible. >> Internships are not dead! Or are they? When we started DING, one idea was to focus solely on internships for students. Hehehe - what internships? In Croatia, very few companies offer classic internships (both paid and unpaid) for students. It seems the situation hasn't changed much. Currently, there are only a handful of real internships on LinkedIn, and just one on DING. It's been like this for years. Why? I don't know. I have some ideas, but I'm not sure.
