❓ What are the different types of AI-enabled threats to election security? Deepfakes aren’t the only potential AI-enabled threat to the UK’s general election. While there is limited evidence from around the world that AI has prevented a candidate from winning compared to the expected result from polling data, there are early signs of damage to the broader democratic system. In a new report, the Turing’s Centre for Emerging Technology and Security (CETaS) delves into the different types of AI-enabled threat: ✳️ Campaign threats: designed to manipulate voters’ perception of candidates or issues ✳️ Information threats: designed to confuse voters and damage electoral outcome integrity by undermining information quality ✳️ Infrastructure threats: designed to target the systems and people responsible for election integrity. 📒 Read up to get the full picture here: https://bit.ly/3WXbOqP #AiEthics #AiPolicy #AISafety #CyberSecurity #Disinformation #Election #Elections2024 #GeneralElection #GeneralElection2024 #Misinformation #UKElection

👑 WHAT THE KING WILL SAY ABOUT CYBER 👑 ➡ King Charles is set to deliver a speech to Parliament today, outlining the new Labour government's plans for the upcoming year. The speech will detail approximately 35 draft laws that ministers plan to introduce following Labour's return to power. Among these proposals are significant measures related to cybersecurity. ➡In its election manifesto, Labour pledged to "build on" the previous government's Online Safety Act. This includes empowering coroners with greater authority to access information held by tech firms after the death of a child. Additionally, an artificial intelligence bill is anticipated, aiming to ban sexually explicit deepfakes and implement new regulations for the "most powerful AI models." ➡Reports also suggest that the speech will introduce a cybersecurity bill focused on safeguarding critical infrastructure from cyberattacks. In the King’s Speech yesterday, the new Labour government announced a swathe of bills to mark the start of the new parliamentary year. Of the 39 bills presented, two are of particular note to organisations handling personal data; the Digital Information and Smart Data Bill and the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill. These are in addition to the reference to establishing legislation to govern the development of AI. We don’t have any of the detail yet on this proposed legislation, but you can read the background briefing notes to the Speech below. We will continue to keep our clients updated on developments. In the meantime, we encourage all organisations to get to grips with their compliance now so that they are in a better place to implement any changes that might occur in the future. https://lnkd.in/e7EpKWw9 #dataprotection #kingsspeech

With November elections around the corner, how can election officials prepare to combat AI-generated mis- and disinformation? At the 2024 #CyberCivilDefense Summit, Michael M.oore, CISO for the SECRETARY OF STATE, ARIZONA, put a spotlight on the state’s use of tabletop exercises (TTX) to train election officials to handle AI-powered cybersecurity threats. The State has conducted a series of TTX with election security stakeholders — including county officials, law enforcement, and media — to train for realistic scenarios and challenges like deepfakes, disinformation, and other AI-related disruptions to build expertise in cyberdefense. “Practice makes permanent,” Moore said. “It’s important to get as many drills under folks’ belts as possible, especially for the folks that are new.” Read more about Arizona’s latest TTX here: https://lnkd.in/gkHVRYJJ Consult the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency website for guidelines to plan your own TTX: https://lnkd.in/g2inEfr9 #cybersecurity #cyber #election #misinformation #disinformation #TTX #CISO #AI #artificialintelligence #electionsecurity

#National #Security #Challenges in the #Era of #Social #Media and the #DeepWeb In the digital age, national security faces unprecedented challenges, particularly with the rise of social media and the deep web. These platforms, while offering significant benefits, also pose severe risks that must be addressed by security agencies. #Misinformation and #Disinformation: Social media has become a breeding ground for misinformation and disinformation, often orchestrated by hostile state and non-state actors. These campaigns aim to manipulate public opinion, influence elections, and destabilize governments. The rapid spread of false information on platforms like Twitter and Facebook makes it difficult for authorities to respond effectively. #Radicalization and #Extremism: Extremist groups increasingly use social media to recruit and radicalize individuals. Platforms like YouTube and encrypted messaging apps provide a space for disseminating propaganda and coordinating activities, making it challenging for security agencies to monitor and counter these threats. #Cybersecurity #Threats: The deep web, a hidden part of the internet not indexed by standard search engines, is a hub for illegal activities, including drug trafficking, weapons sales, and cyber-attacks. The anonymity provided by the deep web complicates efforts to track and mitigate these activities, posing significant risks to national security. Addressing these challenges requires a multifaceted approach, including advanced analytics, public-private partnerships, and updated legal frameworks to effectively counter the threats posed by social media and the deep web. The #cybersecurity risks in democratic elections are more complex than most people realize. These digital attacks aren't primarily about persuasion but about degradation: modern information warfare aims to make democratic debate increasingly difficult, creating systemic interference. What does that look like in real life? ▫️ Coordinated bot networks flooding social media ▫️ Strategically timed information leaks ▫️ Hashtag manipulation that drowns out genuine political discourse ▫️ Cyber attacks targeting election infrastructure The EU’s 🇪🇺 Digital Services Act demands transparency in political advertising, requiring platforms to disclose funding sources and label political content. Yet, while it pushes for algorithmic transparency and gives users more control, the rapid evolution of digital manipulation technique outpaces regulatory efforts. The challenge is nuanced. How do we protect the integrity of our democratic processes without becoming authoritarian? How do we encourage genuine, human political discourse in a landscape increasingly dominated by algorithms and automated interactions? Feel free to explore a more in-depth analysis with my thoughts here: https://lnkd.in/gGm_TbUt #CyberSecurity #Democracy #DigitalPolitics
