Working in the field of residential treatment is at times, challenging. The needs of our residents require us to be at our best every single day. Each shift presents uncertainties, and when a 13-year-old is yelling obscenities or struggling to handle frustrations appropriately, it’s clear that there’s much more going on beneath the surface. The children in our care face heavy realities daily, and Childplace strives to stand by them every step of the way. These truths were highlighted during our (now annual!) Back -to-School Bash last month. This event brought residents together with CASA, DCS workers, family members, and other support systems, for a day filled with fun. The festivities included a cook-out, inflatables, carnival games (complete with a prize store!), delicious sno-cones, and a refreshing splash from the local fire department. The kids eagerly anticipated seeing which staff member would brave the dunk tank, and every participant entered the tank dry only to leave thoroughly drenched 30 minutes later! A particular highlight was when residents managed to “out skill” or outscore staff members in games like magnetic darts, table pong, and inflatable ski-ball. As the day concluded and life returned to the usual routine on the Childplace campus, the Back-to-School Bash served as a reminder of the commitment to the residents here—both as staff and through additional support systems. Despite tough realities, challenging conversations, and uncertainties that lie ahead for each of the residents, we take pride in the joy found in shared experiences—whether it’s connecting clients to a local Pokémon league, helping them find employment, or engaging in their interests like “Swiftie” fandom. We cherish getting to know each resident and consider them part of our extended family during and beyond their time at Childplace.

If you ever wondered how important play was for our young people then the May Half Term Holidays at New Parks Adventure Playground is a great example of that. Play is vital for all children and young people. It’s the main way they enjoy their daily lives, make friends and learn about the world around them. Through play children develop social, physical and cognitive skills, creativity, cultural awareness and resilience. They learn to manage risk make decision and develop their identities. When children play they follow their own instincts, ideas and interest in their own way. Play is essential for happy, healthy, capable and resilient young people. New Parks Adventure Playground is a lifeline for so many families in the local area. It provides free supervised play sessions for young people from all backgrounds, but particularly for those that are not able to afford expensive activities to occupy their young people when the schools are out. The social value of the playground to the local area is huge given the impact that it has on children’s emotional, mental and physical wellbeing. The playground provides a safe place for young people to go who would otherwise be hanging around on the streets and being deemed as anti- social. You only have to look at the images from the May Half Term Programme at New Parks Adventure Playground to understand that through this place-based approach of using your local assets to develop communities you can create a huge difference and encourage social mobility. It is a great way of building the community from the inside out and supporting community cohesion. In many ways the Adventure Playground is the heart beat of the New Parks community and it is used by so many families. The loss of such a facility would be so damaging to an area that is already under resourced and labelled as the forgotten ward when it comes to external investment. Children and Young People should be the focal point of any Public Sector resource and priority number 1 in any Local Authority strategy. For what is a mere drop in the financial ocean of the Public Sector the Adventure Playgrounds deliver so much value for money across a multitude of social objectives which are statutory requirements. We need to stop Leicester City Council making the mistake of removing its resource for these extremely valuable facilities in such a way it gives them no alternative but to close. #savetheadventureplaygrounds

🏘 This is how you help solve the housing crisis problem. 💵 When you incentivize developers to build affordable housing options, we all win. 🎢 Last year Central Florida was the 2nd fastest-growing large region in the USA. With 1,000+ people moving here weekly, we need more incentives, more policies, and more planning geared towards solving the housing affordability crisis. 🏢 84 units seems like a small drop in the bucket, but we're one step closer to creating a better Central Florida for all. #HousingCrisis #HousingAffordability #CentralFlorida #Orlando #OrlandoStrong #OrlandoRealEstate #OrlandoHousing #RealEstate #RealEstateDevelopers #AffordableHousing
Exciting Developments in Affordable Housing We continue to work to expand our housing inventory for residents of all income levels, providing safe, accessible and affordable housing options for our senior residents. Last week Orlando City Council approved funding support for Wendover Housing Partners toward the development of new affordable housing in the Clear Lake Neighborhood. This support will aid the developer in their application to the Florida Housing Finance Corporation for Low Income Housing Tax Credits. Wendover is proposing a garden-style community with a minimum of 84 one-and two-bedroom affordable units for seniors, ages 55 and up, with amenities such as a pool, fitness center and clubhouse, and free on-site programming for residents. We’re proud to support initiatives that enhance our community and improve the quality of life for our residents. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to make Orlando a better place for everyone!
