The single biggest factor behind the decision to return to work after having children is the cost of childcare provision. The cost of losing mothers who are forced to choose between returning to work or looking after their children is incalculable for the economy. A mother’s touch in the workplace should never be underestimated as it brings balance and understanding and a nurturing approached as opposed to a competitive, get ahead environment that can be difficult for some to operate in and have their abilities noticed and improved. The investment at this early stage should reap dividends for many years to come and give a return much higher than the initial investment.
Being a working parent is one of the hardest jobs around, but we’re helping to make it that little bit easier. Our expansion of childcare support is now underway, with eligible working parents of 2-year-olds across England getting help with the cost of childcare. This means there's now support in place for eligible families with children aged from 2-4 years old. From September 2024, this will expand further to include eligible working families with a child between 9 and 23 months old.
