🚴♂️ The Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) is more than just a bike ride; it's a movement that has transformed cancer research and treatment. Since its inception in 1980, the PMC has raised an astounding $972 million for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. They undoubtedly cross the $1 billion mark this year. Today, the PMC stands as the single largest contributor to Dana-Farber and the The Jimmy Fund, responsible for 62% of the Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue. In 2023 alone, dedicated riders, donors, sponsors, and volunteers united to raise a record-breaking $72 million for Dana-Farber. This incredible effort underscores our collective hope and aspiration to provide doctors and researchers with the resources they need to discover cures for cancer. Remarkably, 100% of every rider-raised dollar goes directly to Dana-Farber. Corporate sponsors make the amazing associated events happen, including the main ride the first weekend of every August. The impact of our contributions is evident. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Boston Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center was named the #1 pediatric cancer center in the US News & World Report's 2022-23 Best Children's Hospitals report. This recognition highlights Dana-Farber/Boston Children's as one of the top three pediatric cancer centers in the country each year since the ranking's inception, earning more #1 rankings than any other program. 🚨 As the culmination of the #generalelection draws closer, a leading cancer charity has warned that the survival rates for the disease in the UK are 25 years behind some European countries and the sector is at “breaking point”. 📉 Analysis from Macmillan Cancer Support shows that this country is a particular laggard compared to Scandinavian countries, with figures from the charity suggesting that the latest five-year survival rates for men with colon cancer in England (2021), and women with the same cancer in Wales (2020), are below what Sweden had achieved in 2002. ⚠️ Survival rates for women with cervical cancer in England are some 25 years behind those observed in Norway, according to the charity. Nova Scotia has the highest cancer rates in all of Canada. 1 in 3 patients will not survive. At Queen's Cancer Kids First (QCKF), we’re passionate about raising awareness and advocating for pediatric cancer patients and their families. We have recently launched the CARE Kids (Cancer Advanced Research Endeavor for Kids) Research Database, aimed to: - Educate the public about the latest in pediatric cancer research. - Advocate for the unique needs of children with cancer and their families. - Inspire change and build a community of support for the pediatric cancer community. Our articles are thoughtfully researched and written by our dedicated and diverse research team, supported by four research coordinators: Riley McLean, Alisha Varty-Higgs, Ali Haider, and Simi Oluwole, who work tirelessly to share insights, stories, and information that matter most to the pediatric cancer community. QCKF is the Queen’s chapter of Cancer Kids First (CKF), the world’s largest youth-led pediatric cancer nonprofit. Founded in July 2023 by Ore Maxwell, Dream Tuitt-Barnes, Julia Apolot, and Rukevwe I. - QCKF was created to address health inequities and support families facing pediatric cancer. In our first year, we’ve grown from a team of four to over 30 undergraduate students and achieved exciting milestones, including: - Raising $600+ through two fundraising events. - Partnering with the Kingston General Hospital (KGH) to support its pediatric cancer care unit. - Partnering with the BLESS A CHILD FOUNDATION in Uganda to develop digital information sheets aimed at addressing educational disparities related to cancer. Through our research articles, we want to shed light on the experiences of pediatric cancer patients, highlight advancements in research, and inspire others to join this vital cause. Together, we can ensure that every child receives the care, compassion, and resources they deserve. Would you know if your child had cancer? September is childhood cancer awareness month, also known as Go Gold 💛 Childhood cancer is regarded as 'rare', and yet is the single biggest cause of death-by-disease in children. Aoife Flanagan was just 3 years old when she was taken by cancer. She only had her germ cell cancer diagnosis for five days before she passed away. This was directly related to her late diagnosis. In fact, 80% of children are at stage 4 by the time of diagnosis, which massively limits treatment options. If a simple blood test (to detect AFP tumour markers) was taken in one of the 10+ visits to healthcare professionals that Aoife had in the month leading up to her diagnosis, Aoife would still be here. Aoife's Bubbles Charity aim to help prevent other families going through what Aoife and her family did, by raising awareness for germ cell cancer and other childhood cancers - the symptoms are often very similar. The majority of our revenue was generated by private donations. 📢 Nominations are being accepted for the 2025 FIGHT KIDS CANCER & St. Baldrick’s Foundation Arceci Innovation Award! We know together we can make a bigger impact for kids with #cancer. In this spirit, the selection process for this new European award will be administered by the St. Baldrick's Foundation, funded and awarded by FIGHT KIDS CANCER. Researchers must be nominated; direct applications are not accepted. Nominees to be considered will be asked for more information. Criteria for selection include innovation, quality of the science, and potential for clinical impact. One to two awards for impactful & innovative pediatric cancer research will be made to researchers working in an institution based in one of these countries: AT, BE, BG, HR, CY, CZ, DK, EE, FI, FR, DE, GR, HU, IS, IE, IL, IT, LV, LT, LU, MT, NL, NO, PL, PT, RO, SK, SI, ES, SE, CH, UK.
