Smooth transitions for youth in foster care are essential, but rarely guaranteed. Unfortunately, for too many young people, a move to a new home means packing their belongings into black trash bags. At the end of 2023, there were 6,337 children in foster care in New York City. Children's Aid remains committed to supporting youth who are experiencing changes in their foster care placements with empathy and compassion. This includes providing them with more permanent luggage options like suitcases and duffel bags. No one should have to carry their things in trash bags. It's great to see cities and states step up to ensure children are provided with the tools they need for a more humane transition to their foster placements.
