Nonprofits are the backbone of New York City, often stepping in as first responders to challenges like food insecurity, affordable housing, and childcare. Yet their contributions are often overshadowed by challenges like chronic underfunding and delayed city payments. Children’s Aid President & CEO Phoebe Boyer’s letter in Crain’s highlights the need for cross-sector collaboration and fair funding practices to allow nonprofits to support New Yorkers effectively. Together, we can build a stronger, more resilient city. Proud to share that my letter to the editor was published in Crain's New York Business in response to their recent report on NYC nonprofits. In the letter, I address an important issue: the portrayal of New York City’s nonprofit sector as lacking oversight. While there are always challenges, the truth is that most nonprofits, including Children's Aid, uphold rigorous standards of transparency and accountability. Nonprofits are essential to the health and wellbeing of our communities. From addressing food insecurity to affordable housing and childcare, our sector works tirelessly to provide critical services to millions of New Yorkers. However, despite these efforts, chronic underfunding and delayed city payments continue to hinder our ability to fully carry out our mission. Now more than ever, we need to focus on collaboration between sectors. The success of nonprofits is integral to the success of our city. Let’s work together to ensure timely funding, equitable partnerships, and a seat at the table for nonprofits in decision-making processes. Over the next several months, I’ll be sharing articles and perspectives on this topic, and I would love to hear your thoughts too. A report I read yesterday stated that $15.9 billion dollars was given to candidates and political action committees during this election cycle. This is an amazing total considering many if not most nonprofits are reporting a decrease in donations. Meanwhile the candidates and their political action committees spend those billions trashing each other with behavior worse than 5 year old children in the playground. Imagine what nonprofits as a sector could do to reduce homelessness, food insecurity, childcare, eldercare and other issues of society with over $15 billion dollars. Think of those statistics when you wonder about why this country has been heading in a negative direction in many critical areas. #nonprofit #nonprofits #nonprofitorganization #contributions #fundraising

"As part of the #WHY15 campaign, Nonprofit New York celebrates a $58 million restoration to city libraries, allowing them to serve their communities on Sundays, and a number of cultural institutions were relieved to find themselves back at baseline budget levels." "It is important to note that too many nonprofits and agencies did not see crucial funding restored. Some of these nonprofits will be forced to close their doors because their organizational needs were zeroed out of the recently approved budget. Nonprofits supporting the parks and open spaces - places that are crucial to public health and safety - are forced, once again, to confront the challenges created by a consistent lack of investment and funding."
